You did well, OP. I hope the other owner decides to be more responsible and keep their cat on their own property.

Many, many dogs aren't safe around small animals. It doesn't make them bad dogs or you a bad owner, it just means the dog has a strong prey drive. (Most terriers are like this, even the tiny, floofy ones, but they get less hassle for it than larger dogs.)

this is true

my bigger dogs seemed pretty content with chasing away small creatures, but the smaller ones are the ones that actually tried to kill and eat anything that didn't get away fast enough

finding little bloody pieces of lizards and birds is not cool :(

A lot of small breeds were originally bred to hunt vermin, so they're hardwired to go after littler things that run away from them. It's why you shouldn't trust them off-leash anywhere that's not fenced in, because sometimes their instinct to chase can override their training to stay with you and they could run into traffic or get into all kinds of other trouble.

makes sense! yeah, i'm always very careful about not letting them roam free and take a lot of care not to leave the figurative room open for tragedies to happen
