Even if anon is watching the dog whenever its out, it doesn't guarantee that there will never be another incident. My sister keeps both chickens and dogs (one is a greyhound with a REALLY HIGH prey drive), and lost a chicken once because it escaped its coup while the dogs were out (they have a new coup, more secure now).

She was out watching both, but it happens so fast. The dog senses movement, takes off like a bullet... you're talking like a 10 second window to make any sort of a difference.

Some friends of mine have a neighbour with ducks, chicken and quail. Unfortunately one of the ducks got into my friends yard and their dog, presumably, killed it as, well, dead duck.

Similarly, one of my chickens escaped and strayed into my neighbours yard and their jack russel got it :(

It's unfortunate, but can happen.

Right now I have the two high prey-drive larges dogs and two rabbits. I'm being very careful, bought them a sturdy chicken coop for their house, have them in their own room with a puppy pen blocking off direct access, behind a closed door and a baby gate.

I'm made the chance the dogs can get them as small as I can but there is the tiny chance of shit happening.

tldr OP, it's not your fault a cat strayed into your yard and your dog got it.
