That's funny about the addict thing, because a certain reading of the ACD canon definitely makes Holmes look like an addict. He's able to moderate his usage by doing detective work, but when he doesn't have a case, he crawls up into the needle.

This is an exaggeration. In any case an actual drug addict wouldn't be able to stop for a case.

I'm not sure you understand what it means to be an addict. People who are addicted to drugs don't just do them occasionally when they have nothing else going on. They do them (or want to do them) almost exclusively and everything else becomes a non-priority, including family, friends, jobs, hobbies, etc. Holmes is addicted to detective work, not drugs.
