Elementary!Sherlock also goes out of his way to be nice a lot of the time (paying for that couple's wine, collecting blankets and taking them out to give to homeless people) even when it doesn't have any benefit to him. BBC!Sherlock only acts in self-interest.

My favorite was when he was trying to get information from a guy and revealed he knew the guy was a drug addict and threatened to reveal it to the cops if he didn't get the information, then right afterward he very sincerely offered his assistance if the guy wanted to get sober.
