I have a PhD in Classics, and "The Mummy" is one of my all-time favorite movies. Honestly, hating "The Mummy" for being historically inaccurate is, to me, like hating the Indiana Jones movies for portraying archaeology unrealistically. ;)

That said, it can be super annoying when people do take these movies as fact, or pretend to know everything about Ancient Greece just because they sat through "Alexander" and "300" a couple of times. Still, I think the person who sits and picks out every inaccuracy in a goofy adventure/romance/etc. film is just as annoying as the person who ignorantly thinks of the "history" presented in said film as being the truth behind a given event.

So while I do agree, I don't think all movies really ought to be historically accurate, despite the annoyance it might cause. It's called "historical fiction" for a reason, you know? I don't have a problem with someone using a historic setting and then injecting some awesome (if untrue) stuff into it. (Though I have on occassion thrown bitchfests about how much I hate hate hate "300," so I guess I'm not completely without blame here either - though its inaccuracies were just a few of my many issues with that movie.)
