I just take Joan's terrible taste in footwear as part of her characterization-through-costuming, like Peggy Olson's constant stream of schoolgirl-style jumpers, etc. Same thing with her Mets hat in the pilot.

Lucy Liu is from Queens, N.Y.C. The N.Y. Mets play in Shea Stadium in Queens. It's a hometown nod and/or Lucy may like the Mets.

I know that. But you don't think it's intentional characterization for them to depict the then-sober-councilor!Watson as a Mets fan? The team's history and place in pop culture as the underdog NY team makes them the natural fit with fictional characters who are/are connected to other underdog stories. I mean, which team do you think Peter Parker is consistently depicted as a fan of?

I have this theory that the Elementary costumers are bored with a cast that is mostly Dudes In Suits, and so when it comes time to dress Lucy Liu they go a little crazy and experimental and end up with stuff that, while well-made/expensive, looks awful.

I actually like them. I wouldn't wear them but I'm not seeing the hideousness that others are. I'm pretty easy to please though, so me considering something "not ugly" isn't exactly a shining recommendation.

MTE. If the lighter part was the same color as the rest of the shoe I think it would look fine. They would be cute, even, if the picture on the side is anything to go by.

I'm behind on Elementary but I typically love Joan's fashion sense; she rocks some cool clothing on a regular basis, but I'm not a fan of these, no.

This just goes to show how little I care about shoes. I usually love Joan's wardrobe and only now that it has been pointed out to me do I realize that love may not extend to her footwear. I guess I just never notice shoes.

She kind of has a fixation with ugly little booties. Some of them are okay on their own, but don't go with her outfits very well. It's consistent enough to count as a characteristic feature, like Holmes constantly wearing his top button done.

I find myself feeling this way about most "fashion-forward" characters. Like Carrie's obsession with shoes on "Sex and the City" alternately boggled and annoyed me. Of course I have Godzilla feet and couldn't wear any of them anyway.
