Musical Carousel

( I don’t know what to call it.)

Let’s make this a thing FS. Here’s how it goes, post a song and the person who replies to you listens to it then rates it and comments, and posts a song themselves. It doesn’t have to be the same person. That’s it!

1. The only rule to NOT replying is if you already know the song and have an opinion on it.
2. When you rate the song, try to leave more feedback than “like it good song”. Post a sentence or two on why you gave the rating you did. Do not comment on the taste or character of the person you’re replying to. There is no cult of nice, if you hate the song, you can say so. But please say why.
3. If two people reply to the same song, that’s fine, just start a new thread. We will make a mighty tree of endless grooves.
4. This isn’t a hard rule, but don’t fucking like post national anthems or something. The point is to introduce people to music they might not have otherwise heard.

Here is the starting song:

Alright wtfe I'm down with this. Stream of consciousness to follow:

Nice guitar noodly riff to open, always did like that open chord arpeggio thing. Lead vocals are STRONGLY reminiscent of Pearl Jam (like I'm looking it up right now to see if they're the same person... haha wow there's like three of the same people in this). Could stand to be a little bit more complex either lyrically or melodically but that's personal preference, either that or cut out about a minute's worth of "I'M GOIN' HUNGRYYYYYYYYY" in the middle. Overall probably 3 out of 5.

I definitely like this and I really like all the different vocals at work. The songs has a nice moody feel to it, but is a little too consistent maybe. It's hard for any of it to stick in my head. Overall a 7/10.

Idk here's some animu shit:

I like it. It's bouncy. Though I do tend to prefer female JPop artists to male ones. Just a personal preference. And I'm not sure whether or not it'd stick with me if I was listening to it in a playlist of things. So, 6/10? Maybe 7/10 depending on whether it becomes an ear worm later tonight.

Here's more animu shit (I'm declaring this an animu shit thread!):

Well, I was really glad that I'd never heard it before. Never was into .hack.

Though maybe some would find it off-putting I thought the wailing sax in the background really elevated the whole song and made it stand out, when it could've been a kind of generic chanting magical choir type thing. It was really pretty. But maybe more unique lyrics/melody would've made it stand out more. 7/10.

5/10? I'm not a huge fan of her voice, it goes straight from breathy to overbearing. It is unique though. I like the chorus portions a bit better than the verses, but overall not quite my cup of tea.

Although it does remind me a little of this song (which I didn't like at first and was an acquired taste):

So just to clarify that I'm doing this right - I rate the song, and then post my own song, and then people reply to me, or to you, or to anyone, and then it just keeps going on and on until we all get bored of it? Is that a correct understanding of the procedure? Okay, assuming that's right -

Temple of the Dog, "Hunger Strike" - this is good, and I like it. It has a good melodic vibe and pretty, you know, intense and driving. The instrumentation doesn't quite work for me, for reasons I can't quite pin down - I think I either want it to be slightly more mellow, or move faster and be more pop-rock. It's a little too hard-rock and grunge-ish for my tastes. But mostly really cool.

Yeah, your post is fine.

Ehhh, this type of music isn't really my thing. After listening I'm pretty sure the biggest break for me was the vocals, which I found kind of too-cute and grating. I actually really like the instrumentation in the background and the brass especially, it set a nice pleasant tone. Not a bad song, just not my style. 5/10-ish.

Blahhh I feel bad because I don't quite like it and I can't quite place why. Just something about the vocals and the melody - it's maybe too strident? Does that make sense? I really can't put my finger on it. It should work but it just doesn't.

This is totally unrelated

This is definitely down to taste and personal experience, but it sounds a little same-y to me, and reminds me too much of the older songs I heard on the TV when I was a child, and it drove me nuts that I could never understand what the lyrics said.

Normally I don't need to understand the lyrics to enjoy a song because I can forget it's a voice and think of it as one more musical instrument, but with this particular type of singing voice, I can't unhear the fact that it's a human voice, because it's a kind of talking/wailing sort of singing?

Anyway, it does have a lot of emotion and I can see where the people who enjoy it are coming from, but it's not for me.

Here's my song:
