This is basically my take on it (although I'm also into light BDSM, so I was covered on that front, as well).

It's a culture based around the notion that sex is among the highest forms of love and should be had freely. That's incredibly sex positive, and the abuse that OP mentions is something that's desired by the main character.

It's definitely not for everyone, though, and I can see how and why some people would be put off by it.
