I don't think an independent or third party candidate would really make much difference. Because it would still be the same electorate, with the same views. A third party candidate isn't going to magically change the voting makeup of the country or the broader political structure.

That's true, but I like to dream that it would be a first step in dismantling the two party system. You'll have to excuse my sudden fits of idealism. :p

I hate to be a cynical meanie, but...

I kind of think the same point applies to the two-party system? For the most part. I mean, it might shift a little on the edges, it might make things better in terms of gerrymandering, but for the most part, I don't think changing it would really affect things all that much. Because the voters will mostly have the same preferences. The country's not suddenly going to shift 10% to the left if we get a third party in.

I don't expect to have the majority of the country start agreeing with me. Wanting to break away from the two party system is just about me thinking that the way things work now isn't for the best, not about thinking it will mean more people on my side.

Fair enough! I guess it just seems to me that most of the problems lie outside of the party system as such.
