Because male fans, on the whole, are a lot more likely to pitch a massive fit over anything they perceive as taking away what's theirs.

(Why anyone anywhere perceives mods installed on someone else's copy of the game as remotely relevant to their own experience is beyond me, but they do.)

On your second line - I think it is a common problem that a lot of people treat other people's preferences as a judgement of their own.

(It doesn't help that some people do act like "If you like something different than me then you are wrong!".)
