I'm pro-gamergate.

I'm also a feminist.

Why on gamergate?

Re: confessions

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
There's a reply lower down, but its a little tldr.

Short answer: I care about games. I care about games journalism. I want games journalism to be held to a higher standard, and GG is the only side to even try to accomplish that. I would also quite like people to stop harassing and threatening other people, and it's like feminism in that, sure there are assholes, but that just means it's my job to stand up and be visably better

Why the big stink about gaming journalism, tho... It's not that big of a deal dude. From the way GGers talk you'd think ya'll were curing cancer.

Late to the internet bandwagon, but what is Gamergate???? I keep hearing about it everywhere but the wikipedia article confused me

Who is the pro and who is the anti?? Who stands for what?

*clears throat* it's about ethics in games journa-

Actually, no, I'll try to answer your question. The problem is that it's tough because this is a twitter beef and so is completely amorphous and nonsensical. But basically: it's a controversy that began with an allegation that a games designer had slept with journalists for positive reviews (an allegation that appears to have been untrue, as far as it goes). It then morphed into a massive and wide-ranging argument over feminism, video games journalism, social justice, editorial practices, death threats, etc.

As a general rule, anti-gamergate people tend to hold some combination of the following views: Feminism is good. Social justice is important. Bringing games more into alignment with social justice is important. There is not a cabal of gaming journalists trying to force social justice into gaming. The tactics of the pro-gamergate group are unacceptable. The pro-gamergate group is more interested in demeaning women and driving them out of video games than in any kind of constructive point.

As a general rule, pro-gamergate people tend to hold some combination of the following views: Feminism is bad. Social justice is not a problem in video games or does not belong in video games or is bad. Video games do not have any problems with social justice or the treatment of women. People are trying to force social justice into video games. Some combination of women, liberals, hipsters, and journalists is trying to ruin video games or take over video games. Video games journalism is broadly corrupt. Social justice campaigners are broadly corrupt or hypocritical. The accusations regarding the tactics of the pro-gamergate group are untrue, or the anti-gamergate group has done things which are just as bad.

AYRT

Ah, thank you, now I have a better idea of what it was all about. :)

Re: confessions TLDR a head - a fucking essay.

OP who is both feminist and GG here. I would recommend watching the David Pakman Videos on youtube. The guy's one fucking hell of an interviewer, and you'll get a whole bunch of perspective. I side on the Liana K video, FYI.

Well it started like this:

Zoe Quinn commits the grievous crime of being a woman in the indie games industry. So naturally people (guys) hate her. I mean, yeah, sure her game's pretty trash, but trash indie games are not unique to Quinn.

Zoe Quinn is revealed to be involved in maybe possibly questionable sexual relationships with Journalists who may or may not be giving her a leg up in the games industry in various ways. Either way these journos are sleeping with the someone who they are expected to be impartial about without declaring it and this raises eyebrows. Vague mumblings along the lines of "Those dudes are pretty sketchy" from some of us and the predictable "WHOREBITCHCUNT GONNA RAEP AND KILL YOU" from all the prickweasles who infest the internet.

Reactions happen. People attacking Quinn, People Questioning the Journos involved, Shit is flipped and some new stuff comes to light (Quinn shutting down a group setting up a Games event to help women get into the games industry, because she had simular plans for an event, but this other group did it first is the one that stung me as personally shitty combined with the stonewalling by a large group of the game media who basically sided with Quinn and refused to promote or help the aforementioned Event)

So the scandals and backlash attract the attention of Adam Baldwin who coins the term "Gamergate" in a one line throw away tweet without much worth. At this point Gamergate are two groups of people. People who think "There's something not cool with this whole thing and I want ethics in muh games journaism" and the troglodytes who think "This is the perfect way to attack women". And women are indeed attacked by people under the amorphous banner of GG (Brianna Wu had some particularly harsh threats made and was doxxed by a bunch of anons under the umbrella of gamergate. Likewise Anita Sarkeesian, but to be fair these people were attacking her before the GG thing started, so I don't know how conclusive you want to hold that to be). Anyway, the two voices one attacking women, and one attacking the sketchy journo's and can you guess which voice the games media choose to focus all their attention on?

Yeah, even websites unconnected to the original scandal start pushing articles about how all gamers are "White, straight, male virgin loser neckbeards who all hate women, and gamergate has nothing to do with ethics, seriously, no-one is questioning our ethics, anyone who claims the gamergate tag and questions our ethics is just a woman hating manbabyscum in disguise, DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM" That's basically the message I walk away with, although I admit I'm being hyperbolic about that last bit. Not the first bit, though, A number of articles with titles like "Gamers Are Dead" (Look up the whole Leah Alexandra thing if you've the stomach for it, this is already TLDR) "Gamers are not our audience and should not be you audience" "Bring back bullying" and "Gaming is a dying identity" all pushing the neckbeard male angle are released around the same time from different news sources, which turns out to add weight to the "Collusion in gaming journalism" when it is revealed there is a mailing list for professional games journalists to communicate on the sly.

**TLDR UP TO THIS POINT**
Zoe Quinn scandle makes some people question Games journos, Games Journos shit the bed by going out on an all attack, sort of adding Veracity to the questions the Quinn thing raised, all to the ever present backdrop of casual and hardcore misogyny that people always bring to issues where a women is involved.
**************************

So a lot of people buy into the "Gamers are scum" type stories, and any voice (like mine, although I wasn't full gamergate at that point) questioning the much derided "Ethics in game journalism" was dismissed, quite aggressively, as a white straight, neck bearded male. Some of us took exception to that. The "Not your shield" hashtag was born. Women, Trans, Gay, Non-white, et al banded together to counter the "Gamers are all White male who only care about harming women, not ethics" stories.
This is, btw, about the time I stepped in and went full GG. Seeing the Awesome women who were stepping up, and seeing the VILE shit being said and done to these women (Doxxing was a big thing people were complaining about from the extreme misogynist GG's but when you dox women simply for not agreeing with you. When you send people needles in the post. when you phone up the children of women in NYS and tell them their mother is scum and pro rape... well you need to not.) I figure I could do no less.

**TLDR UP TO THIS POINT**
The issue Splits in to 4 sides: Scumbag GG Who want to take the chance to harm women - Scumbag aGG who want to take the chance to equally harm people and feel just about it because "Fuck those people, they're not on my side" - My GG who feel attacked by the games media, feel there's too much sketchiness and something aught to be done about it - My opposite numbers in aGG who I feel have bought too much into the media side and just want the harassment to stop, and don't believe there is any ethics issue and as such believe GG needs to end. (I'm with them on the former, not on the later)
**************************

I'm with GG because at this point GG as a whole (disregarding the scum on both sides) has achieved some minor victories, made some positive changes, actually helped some people who need it, full of awesome people and are starting to actively police their own. some of the worst people are still hiding under the banner of GG, but their getting away with less and less as people on our side step up. Conversely, the same is somewhat true of aGG, the worst people remain (Arthur Chu. Look it up and accept my apologies) but the commitment to ending the harassment is admirable. The ideal scenario would be working together on it, but the games media is still pushing a "Don't trust them, they're woman haters!" angle, and there's always enough misogynists in any side to make that seem credible, which makes it hard for us to get any real trust capital with aGG.

sa

Also, WOW at the media quickly burying the questioning of the videogame journalism's ethics. I mean, predictable, but still icky. :(

You should be aware, just for the record, that AYRT's explanation is highly partisan.

Not necessarily wrong. But definitely highly partisan.
