Ralph Fiennes...Good choice, OP.

Oh, and I recently found this out myself but it's pronounced "Rafe Fines" apparently.

For anyone who is a fan, you MUST so Coriolanus -- he both directed and starred in it. Shakespeare adaptation and Fiennes is a HUGE fan.

I like Shakespeare! I like Ralph Fiennes! I didn't really like his Coriolanus... :\

Mostly I disliked his direction. There's always going to be some kind of disconnect when a cinematic production takes on the battle scenes in Shakespeare, and I thought they were particularly poorly integrated/interpreted. (This works both ways, imo, as it's one of the few things I think Branagh gets right in his Shakespeare films, but that approach does not work in other action films: *cough*THOR*cough*) Fiennes appeared uninterested in portraying the sides of the Senate and Citizens, which is a major portion of the play.

I found his Caius Martius too static, too unbending. He played it very closed-off/internally, which I guess works okay for the intimacy of the film medium, but I didn't get the vulnerability in the scenes where that's needed. (And Fiennes sure as hell can do vulnerable-- my favorite role of his is the one in my icon, Oscar & Lucinda.) It certainly hampers the "tragedy" aspect for me. Best feature of the 2011 Coriolanus is Vanessa Redgrave as Volumnia. Total badass. And the prosthetic scar makeup is incredible.

To Shakespeare fans, I have to give it a very qualified recommendation, and to say that if you get a chance to see a screening of the National Theatre Live Coriolanus (the Hiddleston one) see that instead.

I can understand that.

Honestly, I enjoy the film more as a fan of Fiennes himself than as a fan of Shakespeare. But I really enjoyed it -- it just worked for me. I get where you find his Caius Martius too unsympathetic and not tragic enough but, for me, that's part of why I liked Fiennes' portrayal -- it felt like a very raw performance and I was very much interested in his Caius even if I found that he didn't necessarily evoke sympathy.

He reminded me of why I very much love the character of Anakin Skywalker (even though so very many people find him annoying).

But it's an interesting adaptation, at least -- the dialogue just oddly worked for me too, despite how jarring I found it initially.

I still don't get how that good an actor made that terrible a voldemort

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the anon above and I ADORE Ralph but...I completely agree with this. His Voldemort was hilarious but made for a TERRIBLE villain. His nephew was creepier and more frightening as child Voldemort.

:/

I agree with this. I was so looking forward to his Voldemort, but it ended up being campy and not scary at all. Child!Voldemort was scarier.

I'm the anon right above you -- I LOVE that we basically said the exact same thing. :D

Yup. I think it is a slightly common opinion maybe? I don't know. I just know I was so disappointed. He even made torturing Harry somehow campy. How could he so misread that scene? One of my favorite book scenes and the movie version is just not good (although most of his later scenes were worse).

nayrt

I found his Voldemort menacing in the same way as Moriarty in BBC Sherlock; he's creepy because he's so whimsically batshit, prancing through a field of murder in his flowy little hospital gown with no regard for how normal people should behave. YMMV of course, but I think that kind of villain is fun to watch and probably horrifying to be around in-verse because they lack any reason.

Just such a strange thing. It's mainly the acting that trips the scene up. Not the costume, special effects or music. Just the acting from an actor who should be able to do this.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Haven't seen the films with Voldemort in so no idea if this applies, but: even the best actor in the world can't do a good job if the director is giving them poor direction, so maybe it was that?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
He was in 5 films. There must have been more than one director.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
There's often a combination of factors - the script, the directors...

Plus even if he did work under different directors (he worked with Mike Newell for Goblet of Fire, David Yates for the other 4), there's still the issue of internal consistency being maintained. Given that Voldemort is so vital, they wouldn't change up Voldemort's personality once he's been established.

I thought Voldemort in the books got less and less scary every time he appeared. Idk if it physically could be played without being campy.

Text: When I die, I want to come back as a pair of his socks.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Careful there, OP.

What if it's the one pair he never actually wears???

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Or the pair he wears when he cheats on his wife/girlfriend?

(Anonymous) 2015-02-28 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You can't come back as a pair of socks, OP. You can only come back as one sock. Someone else will be the other sock. Hopefully, the two of you will get along and find a way to share.

I would watch that romantic comedy.

This is one of those "I'm making lots of secrets to save FS!" secrets, isn't it?

Why socks?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Why not shirt or pants? Or are you really into feet?
