It's RUSSIA.

The American people ARE sick of war, yes, but we wouldn't hesitate to defend an ally from Russia.

ESPECIALLY the UK.

Oh I agree.

The US public isn't in any mood to start anything with Russia.

I'm just saying, if they start something...we'll finish it.

After the horrible wars in the Middle-East (pre-emptively attacking a poor, technologically limited nation), going after Russia to defend one of our allies would be a no-brainer for a lot of Americans.

Yeah, America's whole strategy during the cold war was to ensure that if there was a hot war it was confined to Europe, would preemptively nuke European soil itself if it came to it, and would actively resist engagement if the (then) USSR confined its own nuclear arsenal to the European theater. That is why France left NATO and developed their independent diplomatic strategy. The only reason the US is getting caught up now is because Russia might threaten one of America's anti-ballistic missile sites in central Europe; sites which will not protect any European country in the slightest!

France completely rejoined NATO in 2009 though.

Look, I'm not saying that the US is perfect -- recent history has shown that that is not in any way, shape, or form true.

But the conditions now between Russia and the USA are very different compared to the Cold War and heavily (almost comically, to be honest) tipped in the US's favor.

The US is always going to prioritize itself -- it's a nation like any other.

But the fact of the matter is that losing a European ally WOULD be more devastating to the US (especially economically and politically) than engaging with Russia because any conflict between the US and Russia would be so much in the US's favor.

Whereas if the US did nothing in response to a major military strike on a NATO ally, the entire agreement (and American influence) would collapse.

Russia simply isn't on the level that the USSR was. The US may not be as dominant as it was in the 90s, but a HUGE gulf still exists between the two nations.

And that's not taking into account American psychology -- which would never tolerate an attack against, say, the UK by Russia.

USA is still in NATO, and the wacky old conservatives learned to hate Russia in their cribs and hate it still.

There's no way the USA stays out.
