Sure tell that to us in Norway who have been battling over tiny pieces of land* with Russia for years upon years and we are also members of NATO. We might not be shooting at each other, but the submarines/planes they send across the border ain't that much fun. Nor are the armed guards at the Russia/Norway border, but at least they stay in their own country instead of trying to take ours.

Not seeing NATO putting an end to that, or even worse: Ukraine

*Well ocean and the fish in the ocean, but same diff.

Not really seeing how NATO is a part of that though?

Fighting over fisheries and ocean space sucks, yeah, but that in no way requires the intervention of a security alliance. And as much as armed guards at the border sucks, NATO can't exactly tell Russia not to put its own military on its own land.

And Ukraine isn't a part of NATO.

My point wasn't that they should do anything about it as such, but if NATO was as powerful as your point makes, then Russia wouldn't dare to put actually military equipment in a different country because then they would actually respect borders and they clearly don't.

The armed guard thing was just a random add on, but they did at least 40 years ago shot after children on the Norwegian side who played "chicken" with the borders, but they are allowed to stand around with guns wherever they want to, crossing into another country to decide, be it Ukraine, Norway, Denmark or Iceland is not something a country they have any right to do, but they can as nothing scares Russia.

We aren't as much fighting over it as Russia threatening to take land that does not under any circumstances belong to them is not cool, patrolling our coastline with Russian submarines are not cool and it would not happen weren't it for the fact that they don't have to care about what we think, because what the fuck can we do?

No Ukraine isn't a part of NATO, but why is the world just letting Russia pretty much deciding to put the freaking Soviet Union back together with nothing more than a slight slap on the wrist?

NATO isn't all powerful, but I think the issue of oceans and fisheries isn't really something you can use as a strike against it because it isn't really a military dispute. It's a political issue, to be sure, but it doesn't really fall under NATO's purview.

I get that the Ukraine land grab is understandably VERY unsettling for countries neighboring Russia. But no one is going willing to enforce harsher penalties because, quite simply, it isn't worth it given that the Ukraine isn't a NATO member.

Norway has nothing to worry about. The only reason there was a problem in Ukraine is that it used to be part of Russia and the Ukrainian government were actively being racist dicks to the ethnic Russians in part of Ukraine to the point where those Ethnic Russians said screew it, we want to be part of Russia again and seceded. At which point the world went batshit insane over them daring to choose not to be part of a country that was actively oppressing them and revert back to a country that would not oppress them (as much). If you want to blame anyone for the Ukraine crisis it was the Ukrainian government who not only overthrew their democratically elected predecessor and engaged in wilful acts of outrageous dickery to the ethnic Russians who were up until that point happy (or as happy as an ethnic Russian ever gets) Ukrainian citizens. The whole Ukraine thing becomes a lot easier to understand once you step out of the media narrative of the cold war and unlimited Russian aggression. It would help if we al stopped uncritically supporting the Ukraine government too, and maybe asked them not to be dicks to their own citizens and maybe giving that democracy thing a try again.

Wow, I just KNEW it was all the Ukrainians fault after all! Thank God Russia had all those tanks and troops and missiles just sitting on hand to save the Ukrainians (and the occasional unarmed passenger jets) from themselves.
