Re: 'May you live in interesting times' in-fucking-deed

Not really seeing how NATO is a part of that though?

Fighting over fisheries and ocean space sucks, yeah, but that in no way requires the intervention of a security alliance. And as much as armed guards at the border sucks, NATO can't exactly tell Russia not to put its own military on its own land.

And Ukraine isn't a part of NATO.

My point wasn't that they should do anything about it as such, but if NATO was as powerful as your point makes, then Russia wouldn't dare to put actually military equipment in a different country because then they would actually respect borders and they clearly don't.

The armed guard thing was just a random add on, but they did at least 40 years ago shot after children on the Norwegian side who played "chicken" with the borders, but they are allowed to stand around with guns wherever they want to, crossing into another country to decide, be it Ukraine, Norway, Denmark or Iceland is not something a country they have any right to do, but they can as nothing scares Russia.

We aren't as much fighting over it as Russia threatening to take land that does not under any circumstances belong to them is not cool, patrolling our coastline with Russian submarines are not cool and it would not happen weren't it for the fact that they don't have to care about what we think, because what the fuck can we do?

No Ukraine isn't a part of NATO, but why is the world just letting Russia pretty much deciding to put the freaking Soviet Union back together with nothing more than a slight slap on the wrist?

NATO isn't all powerful, but I think the issue of oceans and fisheries isn't really something you can use as a strike against it because it isn't really a military dispute. It's a political issue, to be sure, but it doesn't really fall under NATO's purview.

I get that the Ukraine land grab is understandably VERY unsettling for countries neighboring Russia. But no one is going willing to enforce harsher penalties because, quite simply, it isn't worth it given that the Ukraine isn't a NATO member.
