Re: 'May you live in interesting times' in-fucking-deed

The current UK conservative party do not seem to have an understanding of how dangerous brinksmanship is, or the political savvy to effectively use it. They seem blinkered by arrogance and blind patriotism. I would say the same of the US republican party too. Their use of brinksmanship, which is to say their misuse of it, where victory is presumed assured if you are simply stubborn enough and because they have a right to be victors of everything, give real cause to worry that they may well blunder into a conflict by error and bullheadedness. The determination to gloat over fallen enemies instead of offering face-saving ways out (and of course their inability to regognize a way to exit themselves without losing face) are also of great concern, because it makes the opposition more bullheaded and stubborn too. I could forsee a situation where a minor incident undergoes uncontrolled escalation simply through preconception that a stubborn refusal to look facts in the face will ensure victory.

I agree they're quite stupid and bad at foreign policy. But they would have to fuck up so, so, so, so bad to actually get into a hot war with a major power. It would have to escalate beyond escalation. They would almost have to be actually insane, not just incompetent.

If anyone is that incompetent it is David Cameron, if anyone is arrogant enough to believe they have a divine mandate to win, it is the Tea Party wing of the GOP. It can be quite easy to stumble into a major war through tiny little steps too. Easier than anyone would wish. All it requires is looking at only a narrowly defined objective and ignoring larger concerns.
