Re: Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality
(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 01:11 am (UTC)(link)Re: Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality
They all believe that the world is progressing inevitably towards the creation of an omnipotent godlike AI while will inevitably endlessly torture simulated versions of anyone who didn't do everything in their power to hasten its arrival, and so therefore they have to pour funding and manpower into building this creation as soon as humanly possible so they can avoid being tortured. (The simulated you being tortured is also the real you, for philosophical reasons I don't fully grasp.)
They call it Roko's basilisk.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 01:31 am (UTC)(link)(Also AFAIK the Roko's basilisk thing specifically does not seem like it's necessarily a core belief universally held by people in the community we're talking about here)
Re: Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality
(I think my issue is mostly that despite their rationalist perspective, a lot of their actions and beliefs - outsiders are ignorant and must stay that way, the fixation with a omnipotent being, inaction will doom you eternally, you can save the world by donating us money - seem very out there to me.)
