The fact that there are not one but two cult leader Harry Potter fanfiction authors in this world will never not be amazing to me.

In fairness to E.Y., while I find him annoying, AFAIK he's not anywhere close to being a cult leader or as bad as Andy Blake. He's just kind of an annoying twit.

I mean, he might not be quite as bad as Andy Blake, but he's totally got some sort of techno-cult going on.

They all believe that the world is progressing inevitably towards the creation of an omnipotent godlike AI while will inevitably endlessly torture simulated versions of anyone who didn't do everything in their power to hasten its arrival, and so therefore they have to pour funding and manpower into building this creation as soon as humanly possible so they can avoid being tortured. (The simulated you being tortured is also the real you, for philosophical reasons I don't fully grasp.)

They call it Roko's basilisk.

I'm familiar with the community, I just don't think it's accurate to call it a cult. It's a bunch of people with kooky fringe beliefs. That doesn't make it a cult and it's unfair to them to call it one. At least until they actually start acting like one.

(Also AFAIK the Roko's basilisk thing specifically does not seem like it's necessarily a core belief universally held by people in the community we're talking about here)

Hmm, maybe you're right. I don't know the group's inner workings well enough to judge. The Roko's basilisk thing definitely seems to be a pretty important thing to many of them, though - I don't know what you'd say their actual core beliefs are instead?

(I think my issue is mostly that despite their rationalist perspective, a lot of their actions and beliefs - outsiders are ignorant and must stay that way, the fixation with a omnipotent being, inaction will doom you eternally, you can save the world by donating us money - seem very out there to me.)

I thought that was supposed to be a joke argument against certain AI ideas, the way Schrodinger's Cat was supposed to joke on certain aspects of quantum mechanics.

It may have started out that way? But there's definitely a group of people who take this very seriously.

Okay, that's just factually untrue. No, the folks at LW do not "all believe" that. A few of the lower-functioning members got into it, and then discussion of it was banned because it was stupid and embarrassing. Get your shit straight.
