It's because TV shows from the US don't have to worry about the extra expenses Anime companies do (licensing prices, dubs, etc). Not to mention the DVDs for those shows generally have already had free advertising in the form of a TV broadcast. To compare the two really doesn't make sense to me.

It makes sense to my wallet though. Fact is, if I go into a DVD store to make a random purchase of a TV series, I'll go for the full season before a DVD with about 4 episodes for the same price.

Like I said, I'd proably buy a series I really like, but the price of buying a whole series on a whim can be astronomical for a student like me.

I'm a student, too. I just don't make random purchases for anime--I wait for sales or pre-order stuff I've watched on fansubs. (Preordering on RightStuf gets you a discount.) I really don't think it justifies what's essentially stealing.

Maybe I'm just saying this because I'm talking more about what I buy in the shops in the city I live in rather than online purchases. Though I'm European and most online stores cater to Region 1 DVDs. I have yet to see a sale for anime in any of the shops.

I know it doesn't justify stealing, but I also can't justify spending a hundred euro or more on a TV series of 26 episodes (more if it's 37 or 52). Again, like I said, I'd buy a series I liked, but if I bought every single boxset of something I was remotely interested in watching, I'd be completely broke. Never said I was being moral in what I was doing, but still, the anime DVDs in the shops I have access to are a rip off, when all said and done.

EDIT: Sorry, something I just thought of =P

You say you watch the fansub of an anime, then buy it. Question - what happens if you watch the fansub and it turns out you don't actually like the show? It's happened to me before, relating back to the secret, everyone and their mum loved Haruhi but when I watched it, it just didn't appeal to me.

If you don't buy it then... well, what you do isn't exactly different to what I do then. Gonna reiterate the fact that I buy a series I like. What I am lamenting about is that I can't just walk into a DVD store, look at the back of a DVD, say "oh that's cool!" and buy it. I like doing that, I've bought a lot of DVDs based on that. If prices were lower, I'd be buying a lot more DVDs on a whim.

And if you do buy it regardless of whether you like it or not then... where are you getting this money and can I have some? =D

Well, I watch the first two episodes of a fansub, and judge from there if I'd be interesting in buying a series. If I like the show enough I think I'd maybe buy it, I'll continue watching. I only consider myself obligated to buy the episodes I've watched, so I generally don't watch a whole series with fansub--the only one I have so far is Ouran. With Death Note, I watched the first five episodes (and then it got licensed so I stopped), and so I bought the first two volumes soon after they were released. The other ones I might wait for a sale to get, since I can watch the show on Cartoon Network and I do like the manga a little better.

As for if I watched a bunch of episodes, and then had something in the show that made me HATE it...I haven't had it happen yet, so I haven't absolutely decided, but either I'll buy what I watched anyway and then resell it on eBay, sealed and new so I'll get most of my money back, or...just rent it out since it's the equivalent of if I had rented out an anime and decided I didn't like it. (I have a Netflix account.)

I actually haven't watched that many series through fansubbing at all, mostly because of limited income and trying to make sure I don't watch more than I can get legally when it comes out. The only shows I've watched past episode two are Ouran, Death Note, and Romeo x Juliet. (I've also seen the first few episodes of the Powerpuff Girls anime and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, and I enjoyed both, but not enough to say I'd absolutely buy the series, so I've been holding off and waiting for a licensed series.) The majority of my anime viewing is me trying to catch up with series that have been licensed here, since I've only been a major anime fan for the last few years. Most of the anime I watch is through Netflix, although I try to catch series on [as] that interest me, and whenever I really liked a series I try to get it on sales at Rightstuf.com. (Most of the shows I've been watching are old enough to have boxsets or thinpacks out, so that means the singles are reeeally cheap, so when I get them with the sales I can sometimes get them for $5 each. I've actually even bought some series sight unseen through those sales: Lain, Haibane Renmei, etc. I never buy sight unseen for full price, though--I made that mistake with Fruits Basket. Never again! I let a friend borrow it and then decided I didn't like it enough to get it back from her. XD;;; Manga was better.)

...I sort of rambled there, but hopefully that makes some sense. ^^;
