10. Yeah, he's fucked up, but it could have been worse. Up until volume 16 he was actually doing fairly well... but then I don't think anyone would have been in one piece after the rest of it.

43. I'm pretty sure he did, but it sure as hell looked like he was dead.

Doing fairly well?? He was planning to kill himself (rather, have Seishirou kill him. Same thing.) He spent nine years pining over a frigging serial killer.

After Hokuto's death he simply never got it together. He was distant towards his grandmother, his only living relative - he didn't have any close relationships with others until Kamui came along, and even then, well... the scene that got me is where Kamui tells Subaru that smoking is bad for you, and so Subaru puts down the cigarette. Within a volume he's up an smoking again.

He simply doesn't give a damn about anyone except Seishirou - INCLUDING HIMSELF. He violates all his ethics and personal values in taking the job of the Sakurazukamori, but he takes the job and the eyeball (oh, CLAMP) in order to be closer to Seishirou.

Not to say his reactions aren't understandable, rather that he comes off as being very emotionally dependent. :/

If you want an example of someone being strong under similar circumstances, look at Kamui. Subaru is resigned to his fate, but Kamui fights it, which is really the key difference between their characters (I think).

44. Well, he fell of the cliff and everything, but then he came limping back at the end, and during the final ending clip he's in the garden-that's-obscenely-hard-to-get-to with chickie. I think. It had something to do with the resurrection magic that the god used on her... that's the theory I read, anyway (there's this massively long essay on GameFaqs that dissects the entire game. It's really quite amazing.)
