Ummm...I saw on the front page of the BBC.

I refreshed it and it was literally the breaking headline news story.

Sure, it's not on yahoo news. Yahoo news is the shallowest of shallow infotainment, only as much hard news as they get off of AP or whatever. No actual cultural reporting or opeds or anything of that sort.

LN's death was all over the front page of the new york times and washington post websites for two full days.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw it on BBC news on TV, and it was top 5 trends on twitter all day, under numerous hashtags.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I found out via a bright red "BREAKING NEWS" banner on MSN. Guess you weren't on the right part of the Internet that day.

I found out about it through a Canadian news website, I forget which one, but it definitely showed up on the major news.

I first heard it on Tumblr, but an hour or so afterward it was everywhere. I hope you just wrote this too soon and feel a little better now, OP.

I think you should have waited like maybe three hours longer to slap together this secret because you not only jumped the gun on your outrage, you slingshotted the Enterprise itself around the sun to collect a whole watery tank full of it.

Is Yahoo news what you consider to be the best when it comes to news? You need better standards.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not a blip" ?? He was front page in full disaster-font within an hour on Friday.

Your friend on Facebook saw it on Twitter, probably, and posted about it. That's faster than what the news does.

News breaks on Twitter faster than anywhere else. I saw it there within 10 seconds of Leonard's death being announced (which was less than an hour after he passed. It takes *time* for major news outlets to create a page of information for such an event, so the announcement goes out and there's a headline and not much else for a little bit.

If you want to see a tribute, go look at @StarTrek and @WilliamShatner on Twitter. Read #LeonardNimoy and just about every major news outlet on earth.

I saw it on ONTD at first to be honest :/ I rarely check major news sites, and I'm certainly not going to Yahoo!

Dude, President Obama issued a statement. I think a person makes more of a blip when the President of the United States takes a moment out of doing the most difficult job on the planet to tell the world that he misses a certain actor.

Nimoy was ALL OVER THE NEWS.

I don't know where you are OP but this news has dominated all the websites I visit (especially with entertainment sections) and my Facebook is full of tributes from people of all ages. Sure, it wasn't unexpected he died because of his advanced years - but he's a pop culture giant and meant a lot to so many people.

I found out through Facebook too but that happened to be the site I checked first at the time.

Troll? I first found out because yahoo sends breaking news alerts to my phone, and this was one of them.

It took a few hours to filter out. Mainly, my theory, because no headline writer wanted to believe it and no researcher could stop crying long enough to confirm the details to them.

Something to keep in mind

(Anonymous) 2015-03-01 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's always sad when someone dies, but Leonard Nemoy lived a long, happy life before he succumbed to illness.

Michael Jackson and Robin Williams received so much attention because their deaths were sudden, unexpected and could have been prevented.

It's like your very old and frail grandparent dying of pneumonia vs. your uncle dying in a car accident because he wasn't using a seat belt.

Okay let's get this straight

You're angry you saw it on Facebook

I'm kind of confused by this secret. News is about stuff that we're not expecting. It's not going to be that big if he was old and sick and died in an expected way. If we had headliners for every time that happened with a celeb we'd never talk about anything else.

The BBC news app on my phone pinged as soon as the information was released and it was on the front page of their website so, definitely not ignored.

Others have already said, but I don't think yahoo is the best place to go for breaking news. No offense, OP.

I read about it on tumblr first, but most celeb deaths I hear about on twitter first. Social media is sort of a weird way to find out, but it sure is quick.

Text: Secret written on Feb. 27, 2015

Leonard Nimoy was an icon, and I learned he died via someone's Facebook post rather than a huge breaking news article on Yahoo news.

I guess someone has to be young, lead a troubled life and die suddenly for it to register as breaking news on the media radar. Yes, Michael Jackson and Robin Williams died sudden, tragic deaths. They were all over the news for days, even months.

There's hardly a blip for Mr. Nimoy. His death wasn't really suden or unexpected. He was sick for a long time. Still, he was an icon and he deserves better. I am disappointed.

But...social media are often faster that TV news, anyway. Because they're tied to schedules and deadlines.
