Re: Fandom Ettiqutte About Spoilers

Once it is broadcast, tv shows are fair game. Two days after a book release. After the opening night of a movie. One week for a play. Live tweeting for an internet celebrity's hysterical breakdown. Four hours for sports event. For a comicbook, 24 hours. For a webcomic, same as tv show, once it is live it is in play. Direct to DVD/Amazon/Netflix, 24 hours.

You need to give it the minimum time a hardcore fan needs to consume the media. Anyone that isn't hardcore enough to seek it out as soon as it is released shouldn't expect anyone else to have to bend over backwards for their own tardiness. If it is that important enough to you, then you make the time or find the money.

I think for tv shows there should be a wait period just because people in other countries besides where it first airs may not be able to get it for some time. I'd say that for at least a week or two spoilers should be marked when it comes to tv shows. Same for movies, actually.

Tough luck for those guys then. If they were real fans they'd find someone streaming it from broadcast anyway.

Yeah, I'll just stop sleeping and spend the night watching American shows live because if I don't I'm not a hardcore fan?

If you are not into it enough to seek it out, why should I accommodate your apathy? It is your choice dude.

The problem with "once it is broadcast" is time zones. One of the few times I've defriended someone immediately is when they posted a major show spoiler, uncut, on their journal immediately after the show aired... on the east coast. It wasn't set to air for hours yet in Pacific Time. And that was literally as soon as I could possibly watch it.

I'd say a day's wait for a TV show, myself.

So you couldn't stay off the internet for a couple of hours, because? I mean if you are such a big fan of whatever the fuck the thing was, and you neither sought out a livestreaming site nor stayed off the internet where people discuss whatever the fuck they want, then I think you brought it on yourself. If you want to preserve your innocence on a fandom, then a couple of hours offline ain't gonna kill you and if you are a top notch fan that it really matters then you'd have sought out a livestream. Either way, your own fault dude. Suck it up and take responsibility.

Haaaaah there were no livestreams of shows back then, dude.

And no, if someone doesn't have the self-control to either put spoilers behind a cut or wait a couple of hours before posting, they're cut. People can discuss whatever they want on the internet whenever they want, true, but they sure as shit won't be doing so on the friend's list I control if they pull that inconsiderate fuckery.
