What are some things that make you feel old?

Remembering the number of years I've been alive.

Five year olds with their own iPads and smart phones.

Your average high school freshman next year will have been born AFTER 9/11. It is just a fact in a history book to them and not something they lived through.

That makes me feel old.

Oh wow, that reminds me just the other week one of my coworkers (we're both adults, full-time job, not after-school job) said she was too young when 9/11 happened to understand what was going on. I couldn't believe it.

On Facebook, I'm friends with a teacher (who I never actually had) from my old high school. I remember scrolling through my feed a few years ago and seeing her post saying, "It's official - this is my first class that has no actual memory of 9/11."

That struck me really hard because it's so different from jokes about kids being too young to remember certain movies/toys/etc. - most of those CAN be re-experience by modern kids if you know where to look for them, and were missed out by people of the 'right' age group because they had different interests, lived in a social class, etc.

But something as monumental and historical as 9/11 was something EVERYONE had some kind of memory of, experience with, or connection to. This was something I "shared" with everyone because everyone had at least a memory of it, if not more. But now, this point of potential connection that was so universal (at least within AMERICA) is just GONE with younger kids who don't remember it or weren't even alive for it.

Going to concerts with certain types of music. I went to a chiptunes festival and lord, they were so young.

I mean, kudos to them, because no one actually acted funny about the old folks being there, but I'm pretty sure the average age was around 20 or so.

Also, the fact how buying houses, getting married and having kids has snuck into 'normal' conversation among my friends.

Some lingo today that is acceptable. The most prominent being "queer". Growing up queer was a pretty bad slur to call someone who was gay. But these days it is used as an accepted term. Unfortunately, that will be one of those things I'll never feel comfortable using.

Er... not even when people deliberately use it as a way to reclaim the word for themselves?

I don't care when people use it to describe themselves, but it does bother me that so many people use it as a catch-all term. It's not the kind of thing you call someone without their explicit consent.

How old I feel depends on which game people refer to when they say Zelda 2.

It used to be Majora's Mask. Now it's A Link Between Worlds.

Hating netspeak (I don't mean LOL, I mean "u" instead of "you") makes me feel internet old. I can't stop associating it with clueless twelve year olds and annoying forum trolls, even though I know mature, intelligent adults who use it, and they're not trying to be silly or trollish, they just didn't feel like typing two extra freaking letters.

Hearing music I listened to in high school on the oldies station. I went to school in the 1990's, but still!

Realizing I am replaying a game that is 4X as old as my niece. And I was 20 when I first played it. (Several years after it first came out, granted.)

Tumblr hashing out problems of LGBTQ identity that we dealt with back in the 1990s. No, you're not the first generation to have this debate.

Sometimes I get messages from friends telling me to meet them at bars when I've already put my comfy clothes on for the night, and I know that even if I do go out, I'll only spend the whole night wishing I was back home already.

A few months ago, I told my nephew "When I was your age, video games didn't have save points. If we died, we had to go ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE BEGINNING."

Articles about albums turning 10/20/30 years old, and realizing I bought most of them on their release dates.

Selfies. The rampant vanity and narcissism that runs as today's norm makes me really uncomfortable.

Hating most currently popular music.

Damn near everything. -_- Mainly though, things and people who've been part of my world and my life for as long as I can remember being gone. Leonard Nimoy and Robin Williams were both very sore blows.

I'm also getting to that point where I just can't get into any of the new music, movies and shows, and find myself clinging to the oldies but goodies from my youth the same way my folks did their Perry Como and The Sound of Music.
