This reminds me, for some reason, of how disappointed I was when it turned out that Ducky from Land Before Time was a girl. For some reason, I was really invested in her being an effeminate boy.

When I was little, my mom would read me LotR at bed time and I thought Merry was a girl for a large chunk of the book because I thought the name was "Mary." Somehow, I selectively ignored any gendered pronouns that would have made me realize my mistake. I was so pissed when my mom tokd me Merry was actually a boy.

When I *read* LotR for the first time, I was dead convinced Merry was not only a girl, but also Pippin's wife. Pippin's badass wife, too. It wasn't until The Two towers when I realized my mistake. I blame the translation for that, as they never actually gendered Merry in the book.

I had this when reading Harry Potter. I thought McGonagall was a dude and Snape was a chick. Didn't catch on until the casting for the movies happened.

Ducky was a boy in the first movie, and it was changed later on. Lots of people don't realize because it was never actually made explicitly clear except in the merchandise for the first movie, iirc.

Could've sworn I saw an interview from the '80s where Don Bluth referred to Ducky as a girl. Maybe there was some miscommunication between the creators and whoever was in charge of the merchandise?
