Yes. ITA.

I tutor kids in English, it's not our native language. One of the things I always tell them is to read (in this case in English). It doesn't have to be serious literature, it can be something YA or something non-fiction about an interest you have. Read the sports section, I don't care. Since it's a foreign language they're not good at I only wanted them to do a page per week or so, more if they wanted.

But recently this one kid tells me 'he doesn't really read'. Nothing? Ever? At all? I tried to lure him out, by asking him if he had any interests or hobbies. 'No'. He's maybe 15 or 16 and he has no interests? What? I have to admit I couldn't keep a straight face at that one.

I'm ESL and I was terrible at English until I discovered fanfiction. Now I also watch movies without subtitles and read books in English if that's the language they were originally written in, but it definitely started with fanfiction. Of course all of that isn't perfectly written, but it still made a huge difference in my skill levels in a very short time.
