Seconding (fifthing?) the "Is this real books vs ebooks or real books vs fanfic or real books vs comics etc?" question.

Honestly, as long as people are reading SOMETHING, I'm happy. Read your Shakespeare, read your Naruto, read your Janet Evanovich, read your fanfic. JUST READ.

It's the 'reading is stupid' or 'I don't have time to read, reading takes too long' people that make me sad inside. If you have time to watch four hours of TV after work, you have time to take half an hour and read. Even if it's only a chapter a day or something. :(

Yes. ITA.

I tutor kids in English, it's not our native language. One of the things I always tell them is to read (in this case in English). It doesn't have to be serious literature, it can be something YA or something non-fiction about an interest you have. Read the sports section, I don't care. Since it's a foreign language they're not good at I only wanted them to do a page per week or so, more if they wanted.

But recently this one kid tells me 'he doesn't really read'. Nothing? Ever? At all? I tried to lure him out, by asking him if he had any interests or hobbies. 'No'. He's maybe 15 or 16 and he has no interests? What? I have to admit I couldn't keep a straight face at that one.

I'm ESL and I was terrible at English until I discovered fanfiction. Now I also watch movies without subtitles and read books in English if that's the language they were originally written in, but it definitely started with fanfiction. Of course all of that isn't perfectly written, but it still made a huge difference in my skill levels in a very short time.

To be fair, watching tv is a lot easier because it's easy to do other things while you watch tv. I often watch tv and do chores or watch tv and draw, I'm almost never watching tv by itself.

Reading a book means taking time out of my schedule to sit down and read, so I rarely do it. It doesn't mean I'm illiterate though, I spend a lot of time reading articles online, I just don't like reading books much these days.

I think we needed to push people to read books more before the internet because if people weren't reading books or magazines, they really were. not. reading. Now someone could say they don't read but they're still taking in information online all day, so they're essentially underestimating how much they do read.

And I do understand that, heck, I put movies on to clean to, or sit and knit while catching up on new episodes.

It is a lot easier to watch TV than read, but to me there's still no reason not to read SOMETHING. I'm not saying you need a to read a novel a day like I do (I decompress in the bath after dinner most nights with a drink and a book), but even just reading a magazine online, or news, or anything really.

I've seen people who bring an ereader or a book to work and read a few chapters on their lunch break too.

To me it's just the 'I don't have time to read anything at all ever' or 'all reading is stupid' that I just can't understand. :/

Same. I get that reading is not everyone's favorite past-time, but I don't see that it matters what people read as long as they DO read. If they're enjoying themselves, let them.

Once, I was reading Time Magazine on an airplane, and the guy next to me started up a conversation that quickly led to something like (paraphrased), "You know, magazines are only like condensed or bite-sized things to read, but you get the full story with books, magazines just don't give you as much." He was definitely trying to lead me into being defensive about magazines, and I get the feeling that he was hoping to lecture me about how reading books was always the best way to go. Unfortunately for him, I just said, "Yep" and continued with my magazine. He had no idea what to do, and I don't think anyone's ever agreed with him before, especially not someone who agreed and kept reading anyway. :P

Well gee, what a moron. A good weekly or monthly will give you more depth than a newspaper (much less TV or radio) with a much shorter turn-around than the book market, especially if you have a particular focus.

Not to mention that periodicals are one of the primary short story and novella markets.

What was particularly confounding is that it was Time, a news magazine. Like, this stuff is supposed to be fast and condensed, rather than in-depth.

Ugh, what an asshole. People who judge you over something that insignificant are frustrating. And to not even have the decency to keep it to themselves? What you did was best; not giving them the reaction they're looking for is exactly what they deserve.

Plus, reading magazines doesn't mean you can't read books as well. Lots of assumptions, dude.

I have reading addiction issues. If I start a book, I need to finish or I get bad anxiety and obsess about it. If it's part of a series, I need to keep going. I will keep myself up for days to accomplish this.

As a result I've spent the past year sticking to fanfic and short stories, articles, things that don't trigger my anxiety. It's why I don't judge people who don't read "real books" because their reasons are their own.

If your reaction is that severe then I definitely understand not wanting to get started with anything long or extensive. If you don't enjoy reading then what's the point? (I mean, of course it keeps you sharp, but as long as you're reading you might as well enjoy it. I'm sure you have enough anxiety in your life, you don't need to add anxiety over reading to the list of things you worry about.)
