It's not just younger people who can have this attitude, to be fair.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Is this about "actual books" as distinguished from e-books, or as distinguished from fan fiction?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
As in actual books vs. ebooks? Or books vs. comics/graphic novels/fanfiction?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
If they're kids/teens they could be comparing themselves to other kids they know who possibly make fun of them for reading.

It's not an excuse for acting superior, but I remember getting teased about reading too much when I was a kid, and I could see someone else reacting by saying they're actually better than the kids who don't like to read.

As opposed to e-books? Or opposed to "serious literature" - because those have been around in pretty much every generation?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's probably a combination, tbh. The kind of person who's anti-ebook is more likely to be a lit snob, and vice versa.

Well, I'm fed up with kids in my corner of the internet who won't "read actual books" because fanfiction is so much more progressive~

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
The ones I hate the most are the "fanfics are so much better than actual books" kids.

Hell I love fanfiction...but that doesn't make any sense. fanfiction is often written by novices, I'll admit that.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think fanfic is more progressive, but it's equally good for what it is. When I was reading original fic, it was primarily romance novels. Now I mostly read ship fic. There is pretty much no difference between the two, and it's the same if you compare any fanfic genre to the corresponding original fiction genre.

Some of them seem to have a reality distortion bubble.

Seconding (fifthing?) the "Is this real books vs ebooks or real books vs fanfic or real books vs comics etc?" question.

Honestly, as long as people are reading SOMETHING, I'm happy. Read your Shakespeare, read your Naruto, read your Janet Evanovich, read your fanfic. JUST READ.

It's the 'reading is stupid' or 'I don't have time to read, reading takes too long' people that make me sad inside. If you have time to watch four hours of TV after work, you have time to take half an hour and read. Even if it's only a chapter a day or something. :(

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. ITA.

I tutor kids in English, it's not our native language. One of the things I always tell them is to read (in this case in English). It doesn't have to be serious literature, it can be something YA or something non-fiction about an interest you have. Read the sports section, I don't care. Since it's a foreign language they're not good at I only wanted them to do a page per week or so, more if they wanted.

But recently this one kid tells me 'he doesn't really read'. Nothing? Ever? At all? I tried to lure him out, by asking him if he had any interests or hobbies. 'No'. He's maybe 15 or 16 and he has no interests? What? I have to admit I couldn't keep a straight face at that one.

To be fair, watching tv is a lot easier because it's easy to do other things while you watch tv. I often watch tv and do chores or watch tv and draw, I'm almost never watching tv by itself.

Reading a book means taking time out of my schedule to sit down and read, so I rarely do it. It doesn't mean I'm illiterate though, I spend a lot of time reading articles online, I just don't like reading books much these days.

I think we needed to push people to read books more before the internet because if people weren't reading books or magazines, they really were. not. reading. Now someone could say they don't read but they're still taking in information online all day, so they're essentially underestimating how much they do read.

Same. I get that reading is not everyone's favorite past-time, but I don't see that it matters what people read as long as they DO read. If they're enjoying themselves, let them.

I felt that being into reading was uncool, especially sci-fi and fantasy, so I never talked about it when I was little. I was pretty surprised to meet a cool fantasy fan in Uni. I've even met someone who was into slash - great times.
What I'm driving at is that it's a reaction to the perception that bookish=weird and I mean weird in a bad way. Cockiness born from insecurity, in other words.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-03-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
To answer the question several people have asked: secret was referring to a certain set of people who pat themselves on the back for reading 'properly' published fiction, as opposed to - well, that can vary depending on who they want to look down on at the time... vanity publishing, fanfic, manga, or nothing at all.

(Usually it seems to be the same handful of kids/YA books being discussed endlessly: Harry Potter, Twilight, Hunger Games, Percy Jackson, Mortal Instruments, etc.)

Sometimes I don't understand that attitude either OP, especially since you're not exactly expanding your mind by reading certain sorts of fiction. If something is a poorly written guilty pleasure, just admit you're reading it for entertainment and don't pretend it's better then what other people do with their spare time.

For me it's the one who hold themselves above everyone because they've read all kinds of old books by Bronte and Austen.

I once had to tell a guy who was badgering me to read this awful military SF series, "T____, I read grownup books." I still think it's the meanest thing I've ever said to another geek, but I was kind of backed into a corner.

I hate these types, or anyone who shames others for not enjoying a hobby they enjoy.
