I have mixed feelings about this attitude.

As many people upthread have said, a lot of this may very well be coming from kids who are being made fun of for reading too much - this attitude is thankfully on the decline, but unfortunately still very present.

Doesn't mean I agree, though, because hell, I got made fun of for reading too much as a kid, too. To this day, though, I attribute very little of my mental strengths (like intelligence, critical thinking, progressivism, etc.) to "real books" or published literature. I attribute them to things like the amount of magazines and news articles I read, the fanfiction I read, the ground-breaking movies and TV shows, etc. Honestly, as long as you're always looking for new things, you're doing just as well as "reading". Before homosexuality became 'cool', I sure as hell felt a lot more acceptance of my sexuality coming from TV than published literature.

It's not even just literature vs non-literature. I hate a lot of the comic book vs superhero movie comparisons I've been seeing lately that insist comic books are ALWAYS better than the movies. i.e. the Captain America movies had a lot more depth to them than the same stories did in comic-book form, and a lot of symbolism and references were a lot more powerful in the movie than they ever were in the comicbooks. That said, comic books have their own advantage of being able to really explore story lines - including focusing on consequences in a way that the movies can't really do.

I honestly mentally categorize the Nolan Batman trilogy in the same part of my head as a lot of major literary works, in that I don't really think it's a good story, but it has a crapton of powerful symbolism and references and general story-telling depths to make up for it. And seriously, what's going to leave me more informed about the way the world works - urban fantasy or a documentary that I happen to watch instead of read?

So you know what, I actually take back what I said at the beginning. I do still sympathize with a lot of kids who are probably just reacting to being teased for their reading, but I still think this "reading books is always better" mentality is dumb as hell.

Re: The comics versus movies based upon them argument, I always find it interesting in terms of comic books that have been around forever. Because even the absolute *worst* comic book movie out there I bet I could find a comic issue I hated more then that.

Comics with such a long history and so many offshoots are just not consistent and vary greatly depending on who is writing and drawing it at the time. There are definitely times movies are off base but I think comic fans don't always give the movies enough credit.

I actually think that in general though people don't realize how challenging making a movie is. There's a lot more editing and red tape you have to go through then if you're writing a book or comic book. Just one example being in a book you can write anything you imagine, in a movie if you don't have the budget to create it, it's not happening.
