OP, I think that's pretty normal.

I can read huge books/series that might take me weeks or even months to plough through, and stay engrossed - but I have to be able to do it at my own pace. The best series in the world can't hold my attention if I'm forced to wait days/weeks/however long in between updates, when I don't really want to.

(...Which kind of sucks from the point of view of fandom participation, because I generally wait until a thing's done with before I immerse myself in it, and by the time I'm finished most of the fandom has wandered off to some other new shiny ongoing thing.)

Could be because books aren't released at a rate of a page every few days. Could be because most serial webcomics are total ass.

There's lots of reasons, really.

this. You can read books in one sweep, but webcomics are often not finished.

Hyperbole and a Half has some longer stories anyhow, even if they got published in one go.

Image: Hyperbole and a half, XKCD and Hark! A Vagrant?

Text: These are the only webcomics I follow b/c I lack the attention span for anything with a story arc. But I read books all the time so IDK what my problem is. :(

Books are self-contained whereas webcomic arcs are released snippets at a time over months or even years and even then not guaranteed to ever be "complete"?

hey, at least you have good taste :P

I wish hyperbole and a half would update again. I hope the author is doing ok.

^This was pretty much the entire comment I was going to make.

I recently saw a (the?) Hyperbole and a Half book in the imports section at my local bookstore

surreal "internet leaking into the real world" moment right there

uh, more on topic, yeah, I often worry about her. :( hope she's doing well

(Anonymous) 2015-03-04 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
A popular concern! My Google search for Allie Brosh also produced the suggested related search "what happened to allie brosh." =\

Anyway, there seems to be some activity on the internet involving her as recently as November 2014, so that's good!

I last saw her in person when she was doing her (very successful) book tour, and she was super friendly, spent hours drawing for everyone there, and had her lovely boyfriend with her. She seemed in very good spirits, so hopefully that's still the case. It was really nice to see her doing so well.

I have this problem.

I LOVE webcomics, and try really hard to keep up with the ones I like, but I forget things pretty quickly. A single chapter can last months, and in that time I'll have forgotten x-person and y-plotline. Some comics I dropped because I legitimately couldn't remember what the hell was happening anymore, and they'd gotten far too long to read through again. (Some of them I was always confused, but kept reading because I liked the art/characters).

Same problem with TV shows, tbh. Better for binge watching Netflix-style imo.

One of the biggest problems with storied webcomics

Not to mention the likelihood that it never gets finished, which is the fate of most webcomic serials.

Sometimes in the most painful possible way (*cough* RPG World *cough*)

man, I wish HaaH would actually update. :(

(is something up with her? some people aren't sure, but I assumed she was just doing her book and/or had moved on to other things)

Well you can read most books in a day if you try. You don't have to wait ages for little story, which usually amounts to a few seconds of entertainment so the buildup from the wait tends to make for disappointment. I know I have trouble reading a lot of text on screens, and it took a while to become aware of it, so that may also be related.

People just like different mediums, nothing to feel bad about.

I'm a fairly quick reader and I can read a book a day as long as I have no other responsibilities and the book's relatively light fiction, yes. But that's not very feasible for people who 1) have jobs, school, families and household chores or 2) don't read relatively short novels.
