Text: It makes me feel like such a snob, but this list actively pissed me off. It was so clearly done by people who know almost nothing about animation. Most of the picks seemed to be either current shows with lots of buzz, 90s nostalgia or 'adult' cartoons automatically being considered superior to 'kid' cartoons regardless of actual quality.

Beaves and Butthead over Batman: the Animated Series? The Oblongs better than Over the Garden Wall? The Critic beating Cowboy Bepop? (Either consider anime for the whole list or leave it out all together, but don't try to convince me that Home Movies is anywhere near as good as Haibane Renmei.)

Hey wait but that doesn't make any sense

it's almost like you're saying that they chose the entries on the list based on what series were most well known and what choices would be the most controversial and therefore get the most attention for the piece

but that's impossible. i mean, it would almost imply that publications like the AV club are incentivezed to make stupid, actively wrong lists as clickbait, and i couldn't bear to live in such a world

Yes, a list that has "whatever The Zeta Project is" in the title is pretty much announcing that it's not even trying.

I recently had a weird argument with a friend of a friend over a similar issue. He linked me a list of animated movies and I pointed out that it was missing quite a few and apparently I was "bitching" about it (not sure how he got that out of my tone when I was laughing about what an animation nerd I am) and there was no reason to expect it to have those because anime isn't what people think of when they think of animation and 99.99% of people don't care about those or the others that I said were missing. It's weird how anime is considered it's own separate thing when literally the only definition is animation made in Japan. We don't separate French animation or Russian animation but Japanese animation needs to be separate for some reason.

Getting mad at and arguing about internet lists (or videogame reviews lol) is one of those nerd things I can't ever relate to. Sure, it does look like a reliably boring list from what I'm reading, but it's just a rec list when you get down to it.

I think the major problem with the list was trying to do an A-Z of a medium, not a genre. I greatly enjoyed what I've seen of Haibane Renmei and Home Movies, but in very different ways; and of the people I've watched animated shows or films with, there's maybe one person I'd rec both of those to.

Also, and maybe this is incorrect, but I don't have the sense there's currently any AV Club staff who really concentrates on animation, either, which could add to the hodge-podge nature of the list.

Anyway, the comments there definitely show you're not alone on this.

Eh, I skimmed the list and felt like it was less an actual list of best animated series A-Z and more "Quick, what's an animated series that begins with [insert letter here]?" so I didn't really take it very seriously. Just calling it "animated series we like from A-Z" probably wouldn't have generated as much traffic, I guess. I kinda agree about the anime issue though, if you don't have anyone on staff with enough knowledge of anime to name more than a couple popular series just leave it off entirely.

Home Movies was the tits. Haibane Renmei was trying waaaaaaay too hard to be deep. And I say this as someone that loves both western animation and anime.
