You know? And I know FS keeps doing this, but I blame AO3 and Tumblr for this. I know DeviantArt had the whole recognition thing, but at the time, the amount of comments and stuff never seemed to matter. I posted art there because I wanted to and I had fun.

But these days, with the Kudos system on AO3 and the reblog/like system on Tumblr, it's like....if you don't get many of any of those, it's like you failed, because they've become so prevalent and so important to the fan community these days. And I think that's fucking with people like you and me.

Not OP, but having been writing fanfic for a very long time I've noticed this too. I can't remember anyone from my earlier fandoms (where we'd predominantly post on FFnet or LJ) talking about this or feeling like this. I'm not saying that the comparison issue wasn't there, but it definitely wasn't as prevalent as it feels these days.

I never remember fanfiction being a competition until recently.

Not sure if I'd blame AO3 and Tumblr alone though. I think the rise of self-publishing and the sense that fanfic is somehow more credible now raises the stakes in a way.
