Not OP, but having been writing fanfic for a very long time I've noticed this too. I can't remember anyone from my earlier fandoms (where we'd predominantly post on FFnet or LJ) talking about this or feeling like this. I'm not saying that the comparison issue wasn't there, but it definitely wasn't as prevalent as it feels these days.

I never remember fanfiction being a competition until recently.

Not sure if I'd blame AO3 and Tumblr alone though. I think the rise of self-publishing and the sense that fanfic is somehow more credible now raises the stakes in a way.
