Sooooo, father figure/daughter figure?

Also, yes. MORE PLEASE!

(Anonymous) 2015-03-04 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
So basically, male mentor / female mentee?

I can get behind that proposal.

Bless you, OP, for including the City of Lost Children in your collage. I freaking love that movie.

E: And The Fall! So perfect.

THE FALL. SO BEAUTIFUL.

I love this secret, and I totally agree, but I'm sorry for giggling at "I wish there were more!" on top of an absolute truckload of examples. If only I had this many for my favorite relationship types!

Someone else who has seen Lawn Dogs! Of the ones I'm familiar with, I do love their relationships.

I kinda ship Cinna/Katniss though.

Recs for OP

[personal profile] othellia 2015-03-05 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
There's Toph/Iroh from ATLA (minor but good)

And then Tamora Pierce tends to have this pop up again and again in her works. Alanna/Sir Myles for Tortall, all-the-kids-but-especially-Tris/Niko for Circle of Magic.

I'm trying to remember if Stargate had an episode... there was the episode Prodigy, which sort of fits? It had more mother(?) figure than father figure though. There's also the episode Learning Curve... But yeah, most of it's one off episodes...

I'll post more as I remember them.

I would have loved to have seen more of Toph and Iroh. They were great together.

That's a lot of examples, though.

Would the Third Doctor and Jo count, or is that too much two slightly flirty adults? Ace and her Professor (the Seventh Doctor) maybe.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-05 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Ace is the best, Seven is the best, Ace and Seven are the best forever

so yes, I agree.

I am guilty of liking the dynamic and sometimes shipping it, uh sorry 'bout that. (Although I think I only ship one of these).

The Last of Us and TWDG broke my heart (But in a good way... Mostly), so I completely understand. (And those examples are so well done. By the end of both games I was an emotional mess, 100% enthralled by the story and the father/daughter relationship, and although I'm not one for kids, I totally felt like Ellie and Clem were mine.)

Hawkeye and Kate are adorable too, and I loved Katniss and Cinna. (Though on the Katniss and Cinna front...I could probably ship them. So sorry.)

hear, hear on platonic Max and Liesel

And I'll check out those others I haven't heard of, thanks OP. The Fall has been on my to-watch list forever.

The Man From Nowhere!

(Anonymous) 2015-03-05 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I love that one so much! And the sweet, paternal relationship between the two of them is so touching.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-05 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Have you played Dishonored, OP? There were a few things I didn't like about the game, but Corvo/Emily is right up your alley.

Also Ib and Garry from the horror game Ib. Someone mentioned Tamora Pierce's books above, which is a great suggestion. There's Harry and Molly from the Dresden Files if you feel like getting into a series. (She has a crush on him, but last I checked, it's one sided.)

Oh, and I haven't watched it yet, but there's an animated movie called Mary And Max that came out a couple of years ago, and it's about a friendship between a little girl and a guy and his forties. I've heard it's good.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-05 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
there are clearly a boatload if you were able to find that many to feature in your secret

Correct me if I'm wrong but...

Now OP, I too love the father/daughter and male mentor/younger female mentee platonic almost parental figure thing--I've written it in my fics, I enjoy seeing it in movies, tv, etc.

However, after recently rewatching the Professional (I love that movie so much), was I the only one thinking that Leon was in love with the girl as well? I mean, I knew he loved her, like how you can love someone you you care for (i.e. a friend, a child, a parent, etc.) but, was he also garnering other feelings? IDK. Maybe I was out of it this time, but it appeared to me that maybe there was a small piece of him feeling that way? Again, he treated her like a daughter/the finest most precious jewel that had ever come his way, but...maybe I was just reading too much into her school-girl crush (with all her confessions of being in love, etc...) and his lack of romantic relationship/ties to anyone else, so he was new to all these feelings, new to caring too much for someone? ANYWAY, fantastic movie!

Also, for Alice in Wonderland, the only time I got the weird vibes from the hatter was when he was alone with her on the balcony and mentioned something about them always meeting in the wrong place, wrong size, wrong time...was it just me...or....was that some what a damn shame you're not older and not a comparable size to my own yes, I realize he lost his family, etc, buuut....I don't know. Was it just me? Probably.:/)

Maybe I'm just seeing things.

But, I too hope to see more of the relationship you enjoy OP. They're wonderful.

Rec: Fly Away Home. Father/Daughter. Bring tissues. There are so many more recs, but I can't think of them now.

Older man/young girl friendship? It's a nice dynamic but it's not uncommon. Like at all. Especially if it mostly focuses on the angst of the man. (Which is most of the time).

It's significantly harder to find older woman/young girl or even older woman/young boy relationships.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-03-05 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the awesome recommendations everyone! I'll be sure to look into them!

Also, I'm aware I included a lot of examples in this secret, which makes it seem like the friendship type I enjoy isn't very rare, but my main problem with this kind of friendship is I really want it to be the main focus of the story it's in.

No romance or other friendships/family relationships stealing the spotlight. (Ideally, no romance, period.) The older man and the younger girl are the MAIN characters, and their friendship with each other is one of the most important relationships in their lives (at least while the story is being told).
Also, the girl isn't completely infantilized and turned into a cute little plot device in order to serve as the man's catalyst for character development, but is instead treated as a dimensional character with her own story and goals. Their influence on each others' lives is mutual, not one-sided.

That's why the friendships in The Fall, The Book Thief, The Last of Us, The Man From Nowhere, and The Walking Dead Game are absolutely my favorite fictional relationships of all time. They are 100% my type.

I would have only included them as examples, but I do still enjoy the other forms of this friendship. I just wish that my "ideal" type would be easier to find.
