And then Tamora Pierce tends to have this pop up again and again in her works. Alanna/Sir Myles for Tortall, all-the-kids-but-especially-Tris/Niko for Circle of Magic.

I'm trying to remember if Stargate had an episode... there was the episode Prodigy, which sort of fits? It had more mother(?) figure than father figure though. There's also the episode Learning Curve... But yeah, most of it's one off episodes...

I'll post more as I remember them.

I would have loved to have seen more of Toph and Iroh. They were great together.

The general lack of Iroh in Book 3 was a crime. D:

True. Greg Baldwin did a good job and got the overall pitch and sound down, but a lot of the subtle weight wasn't there anymore.

It's kind of amazing what age can do to a face and voice that just can't be reproduced by people who haven't lived those extra decades. VA's can't fully sound like it... CGI/make up can't fully look like it...

I used to think that there were maybe rewrites too, but honestly, given Greg's talent... what would be more probable? Having a long time student of Mako's impersonate him for the rest of the series as according to Bryke's original vision? Or completely rewriting scripts, pivoting on planned plot stuff at the last moment, and also doing so by writing Mako's character OUT of previously important scenes, thereby undermining his character's role and place in the overall story?

IDK. Based on the way things were set up at the end of season two and going into season three... I think the plan was always to give Zuko everything, to finally make all his previous dreams and hopes come true, and then have him make the decision to give that all up and join the Avatar on his own. As much as I would have loved Zuko turning good in the book two finale and having both him and Iroh as part of the Gaang for all of Book Three, I have to admit that what they went with was stronger thematically speaking.

The pacing on the other hand... I can rant about that all day.

I was so confused for a good minute because I couldn't figure out what Mako from Legend of Korra had to do with Toph and Iroh, especially since I hadn't thought that he died. I only figured it out after I gave up and read the next comment.

(That was firebender-guy's name, right? Mako?)
