I don't think so.

I think Star Wars is actually pretty deep for what it is -- it just doesn't come through in the writing. In terms of visual symbolism, though, it's absolutely outstanding.

I mean, there's a reason it's one of the only huge film franchises that actually started off as film.

When you look at other big franchises -- James Bond, Star Trek, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Marvel, Batman, etc. they all started somewhere else.

But I think Star Wars' depth is unique in that it can primarily be found visually.

But it's definitely a child-friendly franchise. I just wish so many people didn't seem to think that was a bad thing.

I partly agree in a sense, in that I think the movies are definitely the best part of the Star Wars universe, and a lot of the things that make it bad are by far most prominently found in the EU stuff.

I'm still not sure how far I'd push on the movies being great. I'd say 1 great, 4 uneven with varying amoutns of good moments, 1 just bad. I do think the visual logic and grammar of the series is probably one of the parts that's consistently best, but even that has moments when it falls down. But also I don't think you can reduce filmmaking to that side of things. Story and character do ultimately matter.

I actually really like Star Wars' characters as well.

I think they tend to be underestimated a bit because there's very much an operatic, almost mythic quality, to them. But at the same time, they're very familiar.

Story-wise, the OT is very classic. But I actually think the prequel trilogy has a very good story. People just get hung up on the "tax disputes" and don't see the brilliance of the story Lucas is telling.

Especially when you look at the prequels and the original trilogy together, the contrasts are very, very striking and help to reinforce the themes very very well. Much better than, say, the Harry Potter films manage.

TBH comparing it to the Harry Potter films is not going to be compelling to me, because I think the Harry Potter films are mostly just bad, except for maybe 3.

Again, I partly agree about the characters and partly don't. I think most of them basically work in concept and in broad strokes but there's a lot of moments where the execution falls down and it doesn't quite come off. Where the operatic element can't really be successfully seen. Especially in the prequels (probably in part because the story is meant to be more involved with the characters, instead of being an action piece with all big unsubtle character moments, but partly because they just aren't quite as well-made).

You and I have probably talked about the prequels enough that we're not going to change each others' minds, tbh. Respect though.

Ew, HP 3 was bad.

The thing is though, that 1 great, 4 good with meh stuff, and 1 bad is all subjective. I know everyone and their mom believes that TPM is the bad one, but I personally find AotC to be the bad one. It was terrible outside the Obi-Wan moments. Otherwise, I enjoyed TPM, especially since it was the first SW film I saw in theaters, three times even. RotJ I believe is the best, with RotS coming in second. But I know everyone else will believe otherwise.

So we're not counting Aliens and Terminator as huge franchises? I guess that's fair.

*sigh*

"one of the only huge film franchises"

"ONE OF"
