(Anonymous) 2015-03-05 12:13 am (UTC)(link)Text: I hated this film.
Tove Jansson was remarkably socially forward for someone published in the 1940s-70s. Then we finally get supposedly the most faithful adaptation of her work... and it portrays the protagonist solely as a controlling, jealous, unsympathetic, Nice Guy (tm) who can't dal with the girl he likes enjoying life without him.
Yes I've read the comic, the film's close (if awkwardly abridged), but ugh. There is so much else in Tove's works and Moomin's character they could have focused on. And were the filmmakers even aware that what they were adapting was supposed to be satire?
And no, we should not ignore the problematic elements in works that were "fair for their day", but there's no reason to go to this extreme. People who are introduced to the Moomins through this film are gonna get a very biased idea of Tove's values, which is a darn pity.
Also while this is visually pretty and the usage of colors is amazing, the pacing is atrocious, stuff happens without context or buildup, many of the jokes would be incomprehensible if you haven't read the comic version first, the voice acting is stiff and unemotive (at least in Finnish. It sounds like people were just reading lines from a paper half the time!).
S!B everyone is going on about how this is SO MUCH BETTER than the supposedly sacrilegeous 1990 anime. I mean sure the lighthouse and winter plots were watered down and some family tree stuff messed up (and the later Boken Nikki stuff was pure crap) but come on. At least Moomin 1990 was emotionally engaging, had complex, interesting and likeable characters, and (mostly) good writing and pacing, and even some notable character development and overarching plotlines if you watch it all in order. Plus it actually stands on its own.
