What cues do you use? Here's a wild, extraordinary thought, OP: TALK TO EACH OTHER. *grumbles and waves cane* I blame Twimblr and Failbook and whatever other social media site is popular right now, for questions like this.

"I have no clue" anon from above

eh? how is talking to the other person supposed to clarify your internal feelings about whether you consider yourself "in love" with them or "in like" with them, if you aren't sure yourself?

Ask how they feel about you, ask what their future plans are, ask how they see their life going in the future, what they want to do, or don't want to do, then talk about what you don't feel, or do feel, and your own answers to those questions I listed above. JUST TALK to each other, and things will clarify immensely, including how you feel about each other. Music and movies make it seem as if there's supposed to be some mystical overwhelming waterfall of mind-meldy emotion, but that's just not how real life operates.

yea... as someone who's done all of that, I found it didn't help, because I'm one of those people who would be allright with spending the rest of my life with someone I wasn't in love with as long as I liked them well enough.

I think you're being too harsh on Twimblr, tbh

Right? This is such a weird thing to blame them for.

I mean, I could see blaming it on Tumblr or Twitter, but Twimblr? That's just harsh.

FYI just because you don't use social media sites for whatever reason doesn't mean using dumb insult names like "failbook" (or "facefuck" is another popular one I hear) makes you look cool.

facefucking is pretty cool actually

wait, were we talking about social media

Honestly I feel this way about all those "clever" insult names, like for whatever political party you don't like or fast food chains or whatever. They're just grating to me. They feel so smug.

+1,000,000

They're so stupid and yet people somehow think they're so funny. It's the worst when it's people who are on your 'side', like in politics. Although I suppose it's a good reminder that people who agree with you can still be smug and awful.

Yeah I've started automatically blocking people who use "libtard" on Facebook.

Thing that always bugged me about "libtard" more than the sneering dismissal of opposing views or even just that it's based on "retard" which is offensive no matter how you slice it, is that it doesn't even fucking flow with the original word. Like, "Facefuck" at least sounds similar to "Facebook" -- even ending in a "k" sound -- but "libtard" doesn't have that distinction. It's a totally fucking lazy mashup of two words that don't sound similar. Even "lie-beral" is better and I hate that one too.

I agree. TBH, it usually signals to me that the person is very small-minded and is unwilling to consider other viewpoints. They're overly convinced of their rightness and have started seeing everything in terms of us v. them.

I started dating in the mid-90s, before social media, before it was common for people to access the internet from home. People still asked this kind of question back then, and were still confused about what it meant to be in love.

You know why people ask this? Because they've never actually been in love, and so they don't know what it feels like. It's not because they're incapable of talking to their SO, or because they've had their minds destroyed by Teh Ebil Social Media. It's just because it's still a foreign concept to them.

You're being an idiot.
