I love Star Wars and it was a big part of my childhood, but I can see what you're saying. Though I don't necessarily think it has to be a bad thing. I mean, there is something childlike in its simplicity in a lot of ways. It was a very basic good versus evil in the original trilogy, and the "good" and "bad" sides were both obviously so, without much of a grey area. That and glowing laser swords, pew pew gun fighting, awesome mind powers, etc. do sort of sound like something a little kid would come up with if you asked them to write a cool story.

I do think it's fascinating how fleshed out the universe has gotten though, and not all of it directly from Lucas himself. But I do think the EU contains some of the best and worst aspects of Star Wars as whole. The world-building is just so expansive and the only thing I can really compare to it is Tolkien. Though I think in the case of Tolkien it was he himself who did most of the world building, whereas a lot of the Star Wars EU comes from fans, but that's just the thought that comes to mind without doing any research. I could be completely off base with that statement.
