I LOVE writing fic
My current output is big
But I don't read it
Like, at all
I'll crit if asked, though.
I feel like this is rude somehow
I don't think mine is better than yours
I just love making stories.
I think it's why I don't get many reads.

I don't think this is rude at all, and I don't think most people would jump to the conclusion that you're a snob or something, not unless you were super public and vocal and snotty about how you don't read fic, which it doesn't sound like you are.

It could contribute to you not getting as many readers, though. A lot of people get hits/reviews/whatever just because they're really active in fandom, posting lots of comments on fics and getting involved in a lot of discussions and accumulating friends and followers. I've never read someone's fic just because I like them or saw them comment on a fic (I actually feel weird about reading my friends' fics), but there are apparently a lot of people who do just that.

OP here

I'm definitely not a vocal snob, I love trying to support other fic writers, even if their niche isn't my thing. (There's the occasional weird war where people think art is more important than fic and I just get sad about those. Both are awesome and can transform a fandom)

At this point in my life, I have no idea how to really get involved with a fandom. I'd rather use the time to just keep writing and throw 'em out into the bushes to see how the story does.

I kind of get it?

Although I like both reading and writing fics, if a fandom inspires me I'm less likely to read fics, specially if I really plan to write some.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
(SA because I forgot the MAIN part of my comment and just now realized)

I know other people like that too, so I don't think it's weird, but it's probably a fact that people less involved in a specific fandom (reading, commenting, etc.) get less attention.

I don't mind that tho.

The lack of reads might also be indicative that you're not on top of fandom trends. Doesn't make you a an ineffective writer, just that you're not appealing on a broad scale, and that you're writing also isn't being influenced by other work (it wouldn't be a negative if it was anyways).

idk I kind of see the illogical trail that would land you on "rude somehow", but I'm kind of just giddy to know you just love the hell out of writing anyway ♥

OP

I love writing *so much*. Fic right now is a way for me to hone things like plotting and pacing, with the occasional attempt to create a believable OC, while I get up the nerve to finally, really, truly finish a piece of my own work. Might not get anywhere after that, but I just want to frickin' write.

Yeah, I'm probably not on top of trends. That's likely part of it. I do a lot of story-heavy, non-ship stuff around a character that people *love* to ship. Just sort of having a doubt-week when I wrote this secret.

Probably. Fanfic use certain style choices, tropes or en vogue prompts specific to a fandom, even when the writing differs. (s. florists and tattoo artists secret 12 mentions)

My sibling reads almost nothing aside from forums and only consumes narratives as movies/anime/comics/other mainly visual media. It's jarring ? sometimes how many basic writing conventions she just doesn't bother with. she had to take some flack for it, but her fanfic is still more popular than mine, lol.

I do read fic, but often not the kind I write, so I do sort of get it.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I go through cycles of reading and writing but my latest disinterest in reading fic has lasted a long time. It just doesn't seem like there's anything interesting to read or it's all written so badly so if I want to read something I want, I have to write it myself. I've just been enjoying that for a long while now. I think my standards are just higher than when I was a teen.

I don't really see the correlation between having to read if you're writing. Lots of people only read and don't write; are they rude for that? I'm fairly sure I've encountered authors who don't read anything in the fandom they're writing in so I don't think you're alone. I've never seen them get flack for that. It might depend on the fandom. I certainly don't feel it's rude. There's no obligation to read other people's stuff and I'm sure most people are just happy to have more fic available to read.

I'm fairly sure I've encountered authors who don't read anything in the fandom they're writing in

You can now be 100% certain that you have, because that's exactly what I do. No-one's ever given me any flack for it either. No-one's even mentioned it at all. I don't think I even realized some people thought it was a problem until it came up on F!S a few months ago.

The ratio of reader vs. writers means there'll always be more of the former, so I don't think a few writers not reading much (or in my case, reading in fandoms I don't write for) is going to make that much difference to anybody.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's rude unless you're actively being rude about it.

I know several prolific (and popular) writers who don't read a lot while they're writing. For some of them it's because reading slows their own momentum, or that they don't have time to write as much as they do AND read also. For some it's that they fear accidentally writing something very similar to someone else, or don't want to be influenced by others' interpretations of the fandom or character. The latter is usually why I don't read much until I've already gotten down my own take on a character/s and know it's not based on or influenced by fandom myths.

For others, it's very clearly a superiority thing, where they want the attention and adulation without offering even a grain of interest in anyone else in return. Of course they are under no obligation to do so, but fandom is so often seen as a quid pro quo networking kind of community, that sort of thing can be a turn off for people.

If you're not being obnoxious or disdainful when asked for crit or for recs, then I don't see it as a problem.

I'm the same. Then again, I'm used to being part of small fandoms where there's not a lot to read, so I've learned to become self-sufficient, in a way. Now that I'm in a larger fandom, the interest in reading other people's fics isn't really there anymore.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I read tons of fic but I never used to read other people's fics in fandoms I wrote for -- even if I'd used to do so prior to taking up writing in said fandoms. I think, subconsciously, I might've been worried that reading fic would have distorted my vision of the characters or some dumb shit.

I don't see anything rude about it either. (If you were going around saying, "You guys suck and I ain't even gonna bother" that would be different, but clearly that isn't what's happening.)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Even though you say it's not because you think your fic is better than other people's, that's how it comes off as. That's just how it is.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, no? That's not how it is at all. To me it simply comes off as someone who enjoys writing more than they enjoy reading.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeeeeaah, you're ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Wha..?

I'm a fairly prolific writer in my fandom. I WISH I could read a lot more. However, when you're churning out 50K - 75K words per month of fic, it doesn't leave much time for reading.

On top of fear of accidental osmosis (OMG YOU STOLE MY IDEA!!!) and current fandom trends being things I'm not interested in (no, I don't want to read another high school/coffeeshop/mob/pirate/businessworld AU thanks).

I treat my fic reading pile like my book reading pile. It's massive, I never know if I'll ever get through it, but just because I'm not reading fics doesn't mean I don't still love them and am happy my fandom is active.

I'm also not a popular writer because I don't write the trends. And that's okay by me. I'm not the OP, but I love to write. Being able to share with the world and find like minds is just a plus. :)

No it really doesn't. Some people just like reading more than writing. You're coming off rather presumptuous and butthurt.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same! And yeah, it's not because I think I'm GRAETEST WRITER (though I'm pretty popular), but because making my own stories is honestly the thing that's most fun for me when it comes to fic.

When I look for fic, I mostly look for characters/pairings that I think I can't pull off, like characters whose voices I have trouble with or scenarios I'm not good at.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, me too. Though for me, a large part of it is that I only have so much time to do anything. In the end, when the choice comes down to reading or writing, I tend to write.
