I’m getting sick of behind-the-scenes stuff.

I used to eat it up. Interviews! Special features! Bloopers! Red carpet! Photoshoots! Early drafts! Set design!

But I’m starting to realize it ruins the magic. I like rewatching movies and shows, and when I know too much about the actors, I see them instead of the characters. I get distracted during scenes where I know a line was improvised or someone’s phone went off on set or the actor had a wedgie, whatever. But considering what most fandoms are like, I’m not sure how to avoid all of that.

Plus, by now, most of my favorite things are way past repair.

I've never liked it for that reason. It takes away the fantasy element. I thought I was the only one.

It's kind of why I hate live recordings of music; I'm trying to listen and hear the song. Hearing people's reactions to it takes me out. (Not to mention how inappropriate it can be - the singer will be like "my husband left me" and the audience will scream with pure joy. Yep, lyrics ruined.)

is the wedgie one about Vikings?
Please tell me it is!

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
as a Vikings watcher, what scene would that be? :D

I always avoid stuff like that. I'm not interested in the reality of it, I just like the show/movie/whatever.

I don't need the rest of it and I don't have time for it anyway, lol

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
That is a terrible problem. Too bad you can't NOT watch those things.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
You sound like someone who has never actively been involved with a fandom.
That shit circulates.

I like the worldbuilding sort of things, and design concepts and whatnot. The art side of movies really fascinates me. But I agree, those 'extras' aren't very 'extra' now, every 2-hour movie has 6 hours of 'extras' on their DVDs. I don't watch them any more. I do still pick up 'The Art of...' books sometimes though!

This is pretty much the reason why i rarely watch that.

I've long ignored behind-the-scenes stuff for the most part, and you explained exactly why.

(though watching John Leguizamo ham it up on the set of Land of the Dead was fun)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sort of on the fence. I still like extras but I'm becoming more specific about what I like. I've never been big on red carpet stuff and most interviews (they always sound so canned or awkward). I generally want to hear what the cast thinks of their characters and the world and stuff. Maybe some interesting things on set (but not embarrassing ones -- they seem to love to share those *ick*).

I like design stuff. Sometimes it makes me sad though when I see something so much cooler that they decided not to go for. But then I see something they could've done that was worse and enjoy what was given so much more. Sometimes a director can justify a bad decision to help me live with it but sometimes that just pisses me off more. You never know until you hear it/look into it.

I have had a few movies/scenes ruined by behind-the-scene info. I'll still probably watch BTS stuff but it has made me less interested in it as a whole. Plus, a lot of it is repetitive (like all the BTS on animation films -- that's kind of samey).

I hate that stuff for the same reasons, OP. It ruins my suspension of disbelief.

I eat up blooper reels like they're going out of fashion, but a lot of other behind the scenes stuff I can give or take.

Ah man, I still eat this shit up. I can't get enough of behind the scenes stuff; back in the day I found the commentary and BTS for LOTR as entertaining as the actual films. I guess I just have an easy time separating the two...they rarely interfere with my watching experience.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
THIS!

I have definitely watched the extra stuff on the DVDs more than the movies themselves. And I've watched the movies a lot too. I just fucking love the BTS material for LOTR.

I can see where you're coming from, OP, but for me it depends. For example, when I first started watching Sherlock I thought it was a pretty good show but had the sneaking suspicion that Benedict Cumberbatch was just playing himself. But then when I found out he's actually kind of a hapless dork in real life, I was extremely impressed by his acting. So watching interviews with cast members helped me appreciate the show more, not less.

I like some of it but it usually depends on the movie/show whether I watch it or not.

I compartmentalize them, myself.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
When I'm watching the movie or show, I'm concentrating on the characters and the story and I don't think about the actors or sets or whatever and when I'm seeing behind-the-scenes stuff, I'm thinking about the actors and the construction of the story. I think of them as different things, one overlaying the other, so I'm either watching the top layer or looking underneath.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on the thing, but I generally feel the same. When I see all the special effects, green screen, and how fake everything behind the scenes are it really takes away from the magic feel in movies.

I know movies are made like that, but it doesn't hurt to have the illusion.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
This is also part of the reason I hate getting attached to actors/actresses who play characters I like. If I find out the person playing the character is rude or has said/done bad things then it really makes it hard to enjoy that character again.

So I try to stay faaaaar away from interviews or googling them.

I like a good blooper reel myself, but for the most part, I agree. I don't want to see how the trick works, I want to see the magic!

I don't watch much behind-the-scenes stuff for similar reasons. Not including deleted scenes or the like, which are different in my mind. I don't want to know too much because, as OP said, it runs the "magic" for me.

If it's an animated film, I LOVE the behind the scenes, especially if there's a focus on Concept Art. For live action films, I LOVE Bloopers, but I hardly ever watch interviews these days.
