Same. I ship Bard/Thranduil. Seeing them in a modern setting is interesting to me, though I prefer canon. But the modern AUs are PAINFUL. They don't do the characters any justice. They don't make any sense.

I mean, I think it is possible to write a good AU with a character doing an unexpected job. But you have to be a good writer and understand the characters to do that, and that's just not something I ever see. I'd prefer that the characters came first, and then you pick an AU that fits them. Or, if you are in love with a specific AU, then write it for characters or a fandom that works.

I know some people really love certain AUs or kinks and certain pairings. I'm sure I've been guilty of trying to shoehorn something into a situation that doesn't fit. But it is a little baffling for modern AUs. There are so many ways to make a modern AU. So many things that are close but not the same, and the differences would better suit the characters but probably would still give you the AU you want.

I don't know. I'm just disappointed in most modern AUs that I see. And most of the popular AUs do not appeal to me (sex workers, high school/college, gangster, spy, coffee shop, etc.).

OP here

I too ship Bard/Thranduil. Well, I lurk, because the fandom has been brim-full of AUs ever since BotFA came out. That male model -part refers to a post I saw where Bard was a model and Thranduil was a photographer and I just snapped.

I agree with you on all parts. Characters first, AU settings second.

I mean, I get where people are coming from, if they really like tropes associated with certain popular AU-dynamics (florist/tattoo artist, though what dynamics of this are, idk), god only knows how much I adore "undercover as a couple/pretending to be married" -situations, but not all of my pairings will work on that.

If the pieces don't fit, you can't make a puzzle.

DA

Bard was a model and Thranduil was a photographer

...why was it not the other way around? Not saying that would've solved all problems but I can kindaaaaa see Bard as a photographer? Thranduil already looks like he's posing in every single one of his scenes anyway.

OP

I'd imagine it was a role-reserval on thousands of model!Thranduil & photographer!Bard AUs that exist and I have missed.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Understandable. That was the reasoning behind the current incarnation of florist/tattoo artist in our beloved fandom.

DA as well. Thranduil as a model would win :P, a snobby, snobby elite runway model (don't see him doing underwear with all his outfits) with life like in Gossip Girl. BUT. His son doesn't want to be a socialite, or anyone IMPORTANT and runs away to be a soldier. Eton education ruined :'( .

Bard can be a cleaner on some event or at a hotel. THRANDUIL DEMANDS MORE CLEANING! Something, something. Everyone loves everyone. Something, something.

I ship it nao.

I feel bad for caring way more about the runaway soldier storyline, lol.

SA. Since, I'm pretty much more of a LotR fan, then I'd have to say that's the same :P . Legolas then can marry a Scottish soldier with a history of work on shipyards (conservation for teh army!). Yes, that sounds good. Arwen can be an actress after her father who shall be Brangelina (YES, BOTH) and poor Aragorn will want to make his own name in the world, so he also joins the army.

And Boromir is Sean Bean. Yes.

Um, stopping the offtopic now.

NAYRT

I'm not in the fandom and totally unfamiliar with the characters involved, but I'd have guessed the florist/tattoo artist dynamic would generally imply "gentle, quirky, boho dreamer (who's more likely to be emotional) meets edgy, tough'n'rough creative type and vulnerable side (though less likely to be emotional)."

Whether that fits the characters in question, I have no idea, but that's the pairing dynamic those professions tend the stereotype.

You guys sound so snotty and insufferable. I wouldn't care as much about Modern AU complaining if people didn't have to keep implying that people who like them are stupid or lesser fans of the canon. They get different wish-fulfillment out of it, just because you think you're not doing it doesn't mean your engagement with canon is any more sincere.

I'm not implying people who like it are stupid or lesser fans of the canon. Some of the premises are interesting, and I would enjoy them. But the implementation is terrible. The characters aren't even in the ballpark of close to the original characters, and I have every right to think they should be. If they could write their story with in-character characters, then I wouldn't have any problems because they could make me believe that the character was that unusual profession, which I said in my comment. But they haven't done that, so I think it would be easier for them to stay in character if they chose something more closely aligned to the original character's interests.
