his letter to a generic oppressed Muslim woman when he wanted to shut up an American woman saying stuff he didn't like

Charming. Is Dawkins really the best they can do?

Since (apart from anything else) he's a world-famous biologist whose bestselling books have advanced some of the most crucial ideas in the field, he has a certain amount of platform.

Yes, he's a dick, but it's not like he's a public figure because he won a raffle.

Which is worse, IMO. I had a good deal of respect for him before I found out what a douche he is. I still acknowledge the, as you say, crucial work he's done, but at this point I have 0 respect for the man himself.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah. and he hasn't published any peer-reviewed science in 30 years.

That, I didn't know. Huh. I can't say I really follow Dawkins closely because, well, I've dealt with enough douchecanoes in my own personal life to not want to bother following that particular canoe down the deDouche river. But that surprises me, considering how much of a figure he is in the atheist community; I would've thought he'd have had more recent scientific contributions. Assumptions, oy.

Well, his job isn't being a scientist any more, it's being a science communicator. And has been since 1995.

Ah. Thank you for the clarification!
