Why? Because those are the only jobs people entering the workforce can get, these days. "Write what you know" etc etc

If so then why aren't there more consultant/pharmacist/accountant/banker/trader AUs floating around? That seems to be a pretty good breakdown of my graduating class. Or more retail fic. Now that would be true-to-life.

OP

I'd read a pharmacist AU. Just saying. (depending on the character who is the pharmacist of course)

Are we talking lighthearted rom-com with hilarious meet cute involving filling out the wrong script, or unassuming everyman pharmacist accidentally uncovering government conspiracy? ;)

OP

I could go for both. Maybe not in the same fic. :D

... I would read either!

DA. Yup! Most of my friends would be consultants who meanwhile work in various ordinary office jobs - general admin really. I only know one banker, ironically in London ;) . Yes, Canary Wharf.

Oh god almost everyone I know works in finance in some capacity, unless they're in med/law school. I... I might just be the hipster in my peer group D:

SA. Don't worry, I'm an admin by night and PI by ... night. Um. I just work nights. My friends went the law route (few took med one) - so that is why they do admin as me (I took the drop-out option ;) ).

SA. Not very true with coffee shops in my area - not many of them. Mostly take away places, small businesses, satellite offices of bigger companies. Someone below mentioned pharmacies - I live next to three :P . Sex work is not getting much traffic nowadays (YES, REALLY!) and full-time teaching jobs are guarded by older generation (older than in fics ... 50s-60s) while younger people are assistants.

I assume the glamourisation of coffee shops comes from the XIXth centory artist and drama culture of Paris and it hangs around. Sex work was always polarised - pathologised or sainted. Teachers ... US films probably. Ah well, people like different things.

It's definitely about the glamor, not the realism. Plenty of people go into food services unrelated to coffeeshops and bakeries, but the reason you don't get many fics about those jobs is that they are soulcrushing rather than romantic.
