(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 10:56 am (UTC)(link)-The presence of Zack. If he's just a figment of Cloud's imagination, I found him intrusive and overplayed at best. But the implication is that he exists somewhere with Aeris is completely absurd. FFVII set a canon where, when people die, their energy decomposes and separates in the Lifestream to become other things (trees, animals, other people, etc). Zack just should not exist anymore. Aeris gets a pass on this for being a Cetra, though I feel like a Cetra would especially want to become one with the Planet again, but I digress. Zack shouldn't be there.
-The retconning of Tseng and Rufus's deaths. Yes, some will argue until their faces are blue that Tseng didn't -really- die and the original Japanese is more ambiguous, but the fact of the matter is, you can see him stop squirming, his sprite still and unresponsive, Aeris cries, and he doesn't show up for the rest of the game. Rufus literally was blown up.
-Suddenly the Turks are nice and lovable. While I kind of liked Rufus's role in AC personally, it was massively at odds with his FFVII character, and the Turks suddenly being remorseful and blaming themselves was a little hard to buy. Especially the badass Reno becoming a bumbling comic relief.
-Barret isn't with Marlene. In fact, he's conveniently shoved out of the picture so Cloud and Tifa can have a "family". Why would Barret go out again and leave his daughter, who he desperately did not want to leave at all, or did we just conveniently catch him at the time he happened to be away to look for oil fields? Either way, Barret majorly got the shaft, despite being such a central character to the original game, while optional character Vincent is center stage.
-Cloud's angst could certainly be justified if you try, but the fact that his depression and lack of self-worth was already resolved in the original game makes it more likely that Square Enix just wanted to go for the cool, angsty protagonist that they're so fond of.
-On that note, the resolution of Tifa and co. sitting in the Highwind and watching so Cloud can "sort things out on his own" was the most ridiculous thing of all. They've resolved themselves in the original game too, as a team who fights together, even through their personal problems. I do not believe that Cloud's crew would just sit there so Cloud can get his ass handed to him all by himself.
-The Jenova/Sephiroth thing is controversial, even if the Compilation's canon asserted that it's always been Sephiroth in control, I don't personally buy it so that bothered me, too. I have a lot of trouble either way accepting that Sephiroth should be capable of coming back at all once he was totally destroyed - a better explanation would be that remnants of Jenova formed themselves to appear as what Cloud fears most, Sephiroth. But anyway, Sephiroth himself may have been infected with Jenova cells, but he is still human, and as such, he, like Zack, should also be a tree by now.
-Finally, giving FFVII a sequel at all destroys the ambiguity and mystery of the game's original ending, where you literally have no idea if the Planet decided to destroy humanity, or they survived after all.
I admit I also have some personal things I just didn't like about the movie, that aren't really related to the original game - the lack of focus on the rest of Avalanche, for one. Tifa's redesign - haircut and it being black instead of dark brown and no red eyes (personal taste, whatever). Aeris would've been more effective in flashback memories that show her fun side rather than this ghostly, relatively stoic presentation. The whole movie seeming like a Cloud wank fest. Obnoxious bad guys (Kadaj was all right, but the dialogue between the brothers was pretty cringe-worthy, imo). And so on... but I will say there were things I liked about it as well. I more or less enjoy watching it. I like most of the character designs, Cloud especially, and I love Tifa's new outfit (no female characters are shamelessly sexualized in the movie, it's impressive). Some of it was quite nice, I loved the Denzel bits, the Tifa fight scene, Marlene, the church aesthetic, even the Geostigma idea was kind of interesting. Some of the scenes were really effective, like Kadaj and Rufus, very eerie. But overall, I like it better as a fanfiction rather than as a real sequel, because I just don't think it fits.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)Sephiroth being the new Jenova has been canon since the original game's Ultimania so yes, I think they know what they're doing there and your pet theories mean jack shit compared to the writers who have had that as the plot since the finalized version.
Depression doesn't just magically go away, and I'm sorry, but DYING OF AN INCURABLE DISEASE is a really fucking legitimate reason to be depressed, especially when the guilt of everything is also catching up to you. Thanks for being a fucking ableist piece of shit.
Basically if you're using the OG's shit localization (it is NOTORIOUSLY bad), then you've already lost the argument because it means you're using a shoddy translation at best (her name is Aerith, that's how that's actually translated, not fucking Aeris, Reno basically ends his sentences with "yo" a lot and isn't as stone cold as he's shown as in OG which is what makes the whole Wutai thing so chilling in the end, there WAS a legit translation error in that Tseng wasn't dead but near death and probably wouldn't have died if he hadn't been gotten out of there and to help when he did, hence not appearing in the game--Elena's Japanese text points out that she thinks Cloud and them nearly killed the guy, etc).
Signed, a fan of FF7 since it first came out.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-06 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)LOL no the original game did not have Ultimania. That was published 10 years after, long long after they had started work on the Compilation. Are you serious right now? Also you seem to be unaware that the writers changed. The staff was different. The original FFVII team was not the same team that worked on the Compilation. Even if they weren't, that doesn't negate the fact that the team now has an active interest to incorporate the Compilation into their canon.
Also, did you just call me ableist because I said Cloud was angsty and also characterized completely different than he was in the original game? As hilarious as you are (and trust me, you are!), I don't think that merits a response.
Haha, ooh, stepped on some toes by calling her Aeris, did I? And no... her name was Aeris in the original game. Thus, she is Aeris, both to me and the hundreds of thousands of fans who played the original game. Promotional materials in Japan also used Aeris, by the way, it wasn't only Aerith. Her name is Aeris in the original game (and some promotional material, and Tactics, etc). Get over it. That's her name.
Clearly you do not know Japanese. I actually do, by the way, I have my JLPT 1, and played the game in Japanese, too. Ending a sentence with "Yo" is NOT funny or playful. Reno speaks like a yakuza. And no, the script was never completely altered in an attempt to make Reno more cold. Where the heck did you even hear that? And the Japanese translation of Elena's line is no more ambiguous than the English. Elena accuses them of going after Tseng. Again, no reference is made to explicitly imply that he's alive. And considering he doesn't show up for the rest of the game, and his body will literally stop twitching and become unresponsive if you leave and come back, I think concluding that he's dead is pretty safe.

Elena says: よくも私のボスをやってくれたわね! "How could/how dare you do that to my boss!"
(For reference, in English she says: "But you really got guts doin' my boss
in like that!")
While she doesn't state that he survived, true, the line actually is much more ambiguous than it is in English. "Did in" strongly implies "killed" and there's absolutely no such implication in the line above. It could mean "killed" but it could also mean anything bad, really. You could have kicked him in the shins and someone could still say that to you in Japanese, whereas "did in" in English has some pretty strong nuances.
Apparently they changed the line for the English PC release to "messed up" rather than "did in" to make it less confusing. Personally, to have it be just as ambiguous as the original Japanese, I've have gone with "you really did a number on my boss" but... eh. I have all the time in the world to think about it, you really don't when you're translating tens of thousands of lines of dialogue for a video game company.
(Since the above anons are pulling out weeb cred, here's mine: JLPT N1, 15 years of Japanese, graduate classes in Japan in Japanese, lived in Japan three years now, professional translator with published translations.)
But if you don't believe me, here's a native Japanese fan's commentary on it:
http://blueapple.sub.jp/enquete/answer-ff7.htm
"In Icicle Lodge Elena says "(that line)", but we don't know whether that means "killed" or "wounded near the point of death." Elena's actions here don't seem too serious, so he probably didn't lose his life, right?"
For the record, above that he has much the same speculation as the English-speaking fans for that rationale: 古代種の神殿でツォンは最後に「私は……まだ、生きている……」と言ってますが、
これが「大丈夫」という意味なのか、「まだ生きてるがこれから死ぬ」という意味なのかわかりませんね
"In the Temple of the Ancients the last thing Tseng says is "I'm... still alive...", but we don't know whether that means "I'm okay" or "I'm still alive right now, but I'm going to die."
ツォンが瀕死ならエアリスが回復魔法を使ったでしょうし、
傷自体は致命傷ではなかったんだと思います。(泣いていたので手遅れとも取れますが…)
"If Tseng was on the verge of death, Aeris would have used a healing spell, right, so I don't think his wounds were fatal. (Though you could take from the fact that she cries that you were too late, too...)"
Basically, this is why the Japanese fans were less shocked when he reappeared in Advent Children. It was completely ambiguous in the original; in English, there is definitely the implication that he's dead, which is why so many people just assumed that he was. As someone else pointed out above, he "stop twitching" if you go back to him and doesn't talk anymore, but this could just be because he passed out, too.
(The CoD fandom had this argument over Captain Price, because if you hack the scene where he's badly wounded and someone's trying to resuscitate him you can keep the camera focused on him instead of where it normally goes to follow the main character, and the medic stops trying. Some people took this as "proof" he was dead, but lo and behold he was back for the next installment. Personally, unless it's 100% confirmed and the body is buried like lol Aeris I tend to assume that someone's still alive in most media ;p)
