How. How could you possibly erase the (sub)text.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-08 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
the same way they erased the (sub)text from the illiad/troy -- they turned Achilles' lover, Patroclus, into his "cousin".

In what version did that actually erase the (sub)text rather than just making it incestual (sub)text?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-08 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
the 2004 brad pitt movie. they made achilles so hetero it was laughable. and if you saw incestual subtext between "cousin" patroclus and brad pitt's achilles, you've got those shipping glasses on too tight.

IDK, I just rewatched Troy recently and I could roll with the cousincest. ~I can't fight if I'm worried about you~ and all that.

It was definitely a goddamn waste of Brad Pitt and Garrett Hedlund, though.

they made pitt so BEAUTIFUL in that movie, though. then again, i have a thing for long!hair brad pitt. mmm.... long!hairbradpitt.

Oh, definitely. If there's one thing that movie has going for it, it's eyecandy. SO MANY BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE. (I saw someone saying "stop Brad Pitt as the faceclaim for Achilles" and I was like ... you poor misguided soul.)

ikr, just how... They utterly changed Patroclus!

Now I'm trying to imagine an Iliad/Sailor Moon crossover. It's not going well.

Iirc sometimes Patroclus actually is Achilles' cousin in the classical versions of the story - it's just that doesn't stop him from being Achilles' lover, too. (which, to be fair, is not necessarily "canon" in all versions, but it does seem to be pretty understood by Greek audiences)

Achilles also rapes or tries to rape Troilus during the Trojan war before murdering him in Apollo's temple. But if you want to call that Achilles' bisexuality, or just him being a rapist (especially considering Troilus symbolizes the fate of Troy, and to "rape" the kid has more than a little symbolism) is up to you, I guess.

I definitely believe they could erase the subtext. All they'd have to do is write a totally different story and slap the title Gilgamesh on it.

I'd be more upset if they erased the fantastic female narrator voice at the start of the tale. She was hilarious.
