How. How could you possibly erase the (sub)text.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-08 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
the same way they erased the (sub)text from the illiad/troy -- they turned Achilles' lover, Patroclus, into his "cousin".

In what version did that actually erase the (sub)text rather than just making it incestual (sub)text?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-08 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
the 2004 brad pitt movie. they made achilles so hetero it was laughable. and if you saw incestual subtext between "cousin" patroclus and brad pitt's achilles, you've got those shipping glasses on too tight.

IDK, I just rewatched Troy recently and I could roll with the cousincest. ~I can't fight if I'm worried about you~ and all that.

It was definitely a goddamn waste of Brad Pitt and Garrett Hedlund, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
they made pitt so BEAUTIFUL in that movie, though. then again, i have a thing for long!hair brad pitt. mmm.... long!hairbradpitt.

Now I'm trying to imagine an Iliad/Sailor Moon crossover. It's not going well.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-08 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Iirc sometimes Patroclus actually is Achilles' cousin in the classical versions of the story - it's just that doesn't stop him from being Achilles' lover, too. (which, to be fair, is not necessarily "canon" in all versions, but it does seem to be pretty understood by Greek audiences)

Achilles also rapes or tries to rape Troilus during the Trojan war before murdering him in Apollo's temple. But if you want to call that Achilles' bisexuality, or just him being a rapist (especially considering Troilus symbolizes the fate of Troy, and to "rape" the kid has more than a little symbolism) is up to you, I guess.

I definitely believe they could erase the subtext. All they'd have to do is write a totally different story and slap the title Gilgamesh on it.

I'd be more upset if they erased the fantastic female narrator voice at the start of the tale. She was hilarious.

I assume you've poked at Ao3? I have a dim memory that it's one of the fandoms that's requested quite often for Yuletide (unless all those requests were from you, OP.)

(Anonymous) 2015-03-08 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I've read some of the Yuletide fanfics for it. I didn't understand a thing!

So exactly in character with the original, then.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-08 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I first heard about Gilgamesh on Star Trek TNG. :)

Looking at the new Alexander movie, I'm not sure they would erase the gay subtext. I think there's a good chance that they'd actually go full-on with it (but probably in a way that fetishizes it). It just seems like a trend in Hollywood.

Besides, Hollywood loves buddy movies and most of those have some heavy subtext in them. I think it would be fine.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-08 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you mean the Alexander movie from a few years ago? They did have Alexander's bisexuality be canon, which was awesome, but they actually got a lot of crap for that, which may have actually affected their ratings. Even Greece's government was mad about it, apparently, and Greek "historians" who deny that Alexander was into guys... Though I think the movie had a few other flaws, as for the gayness, I think it was released just a few years too early. Would've had a better chance at success today.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-08 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The movie tanked because it was terrible, not because Alexander smooched Bagoas once in it. And personally I'm still mad about what they did to Hephaistion, starting with that stupid hair.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-08 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I first heard about Gilgamesh in Final Fantasy.

I first heard about it in Ondaaje's In the Skin of a Lion and have wanted a modern adaptation ever since.

I would watch that movie. I would watch it SO HARD.

Well, beards are in right now, so we might get a movie. The Indian movie based on Bramhasutra, I think it's Bramhasutra, is doing well, so old legends movies can become popular.

Holy crap, I totally had that version of the Epic of Gilgamesh when I was a kid. I loved the illustrations and I'm pretty sure I shipped them even then.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
All that Enkidu and Ishtar...

All I know is that if this is executed well, I'm thinking somewhere near Tarsem Singh's The Fall, then this could be amazing. And the final scene should have everyone crying and thinking about their humanity.

Thank you college, for showing me the Epic of Gilgamesh.

I'm not sure a movie is a good thing, subtext or not.

Remember Beowulf? Yeah.

Text: I love the Epic of Gilgamesh so much. I wish it had more modern adaptations and retellings, it’s a great story and this way more people would know about it. Imagine a high budget movie, it would be awesome.

But at the same time I’m sure any mainstream adaptation would erase the gay (sub)text and I know I would hate them for it.

Bonus: It makes me truly sad that most people don’t know about one of the oldest surviving works of world literature

Just be glad it hasn't gotten a Troy treatment yet...
