I totally agree, anon. My respect for those artists who only draw female characters is overflowing, because how often they draw them in T&A poses in bikinis kissing other women is directly proportional to how much they respect them and love them as characters, and it shows.

They are drawing people they find hot. Most fandom people are women. Most women are heterosexual. Therefore, most of the people they find hot will be men (and men making out with men).

How is this any different than dudes who only draw girls? Some artists only like drawing things they'd be attracted to, and I don't see anything wrong with that. This isn't like fic where having no women makes no sense unless your characters are in the same room the entire time.

...Why does it bother you if they choose to draw males? Do people that draw only females, or only dragons, or only kitties, bother you too?

I'm a straight girl who hates drawing slash (despite finding it hot) because the female form is INFINITELY easier for me to draw due to familiarity with my own body. Female characters are often more fluid and fun to draw imho and I love subverting the overly sexualized takes.

Huh, I can sort of understand where OP's coming from. Back in the golden years of deviantart I knew a bunch of young artists who straight-up refused to draw girls because of reasons I can only really interpret as internalized misogyny. Those same people loved to draw androgynous boys in frilly pink dresses though.

Or maybe they just suck at drawing women? I'm the inverse: I can only draw girls, I really just can't get male anatomy down at all. But I'd draw more of them if I could.

Or maybe it's a very male-heavy canon, like SPN.

Or maybe they just like drawing hot guys. Who kiss other guys.

There's no insidious misogyny going on here except in your own head. You sound like you're looking for feminist brownie points, which is, frankly, annoying.

Some of them could have a similar problem to the one I have. I'm almost never happy with the way male characters I try to draw look. It sucks because there are a ton of characters I want to do fanart of, and OCs I want to draw, but the attempts looks so horrible to me. I'm usually a lot happier with how my drawings of female characters look.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's way more uncomfortable if they draw lots of women in a sexist way.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-09 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the other way around. I really favor the female characters to the point it worries me.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-10 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
It really depends on context.
Drawing only male characters for a fandom thats mostly starting men? Understandable.
Drawing only male characters for a fandom that's mostly filled with women/women make up at least half the cast? That's a bit eyebrow raising.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-10 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I like that picture, even if it is all men. Fabulous art!

(Anonymous) 2015-03-10 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I understand this to a point. Like all of the Avengers drawings I saw that had all of the guys (plus often Coulson and/or Loki) but didn't have Natasha really bothered me. I mean, I understand that people draw what they like, but seeing something like that from so many different people really made me wonder.

I don't think it's rocket science why, ESPECIALLY if it's slash and/or hot dudes.

Despite what most here are saying, you're allowed to evaluate an artist on their subject matter and content and decide if you like them or not.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-10 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Shouldn't how they draw the women matter more? Aside from T&A artists, there's female artists whose weird issues with their own gender show up in their art. So they'll only have female characters as jokes and shipping obstacles, or they'll outright villainize them. And do you count artists who don't draw canon female characters, but have a bunch of rule 63 that replaces the characters with fanservicy archetypes?

This was meant to be about people doing what they want. I didn't realize how annoying I found some of the more common stuff.

That's cool, I can't force you to like my art. But the reason I only draw dudes is because I typically only ship dudes and almost everything I draw is shippy. Shrug shrug shrug.

Image: a black-and-white drawing of three dudes

Text: My support for a fanartist depends on how much they draw female characters of a given fandom. If their gallery is a steady flood of hot dudes (bonus points for slash) I lose interest and move on.

Artists who have no interest in depicting women make me feel uncomfortable. What is your reasoning, artist? You spend all your free time drawing humans yet ONLY the male portion is worth your attention?
