My point was that if he ever chose to run for office on a platform of coming down hard on offenders, he'd look like a giant hypocrite. But on the other hand, those people are usually hypocrites anyway, so perhaps he'd be fine.

2. This hypothetical future only looks hypocritical if he whines about how he should get a break now. But even if he did...people change. It's typically called growing.

He kind of is whining about how he should get a break now, if he's expecting his family to step in with the money to keep him out of jail.

But like it or not, paying the fine is an established method for avoiding jail. The closest parallel to what you're suggesting is if there were no other options and he cried that there should be or that what he did wasn't THAT BAD so there shouldn't be a punishment for him.

Yes, it is an established method for avoiding jail--but instead of having him pay it himself, family members are looking to the OP to pay it for him. Paying your own fine is accepting the consequences of your actions, but looking to others to pay it for you is expecting others to get you out of the trouble you made for yourself.
