Is straight canon romance really that unusual in this genre? I don't know as much about it as I'd like and the first thing that comes to mind is Sailor Moon, so...

Yeah kinda, there really isn't much magical girl anime for girls now a days. It's mostly aimed at the (male) late night crowd and yuribait tends to be common with those shows.

Really? I think PreCure is still pretty intensely popular, and it's aimed at young girls. At minimum, I'm guessing it gets better ratings than the late-night ones by an order of magnitude or so. It just doesn't get as much play in the English-speaking fandoms because very few of the fans doing fansubs or buying DVDs are five-to-ten-year-old girls.

I'm aware, but that goes for pretty much all day time stuff and PreCure has been losing popularity for awhile. There's other more popular day stuff aimed at girls, but as far as I know Precure's the only current magical girl show.

It is. It's everywhere in Japan; on balloons and at toy stores and everything. Little girls there are all over that shit.

Some years ago most shows had some romance: Sailor Moon, CCS, Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne, Princess... Now you have things like Madoka and Yuuki Yuuna.
