The art style for this is terrible and I still can't understand why it's one of the most popular cartoons on both sides of the ocean.

Personally, I just watched in morbid fascination. It was just so grotesque!

Because men like tits. Any tits, no matter how grotesque, as long as they are big and in your face, men will pay you for it.

I'm not saying selective abortion is definitely the answer, that that it's not NOT the answer.

Because it's actually pretty fun from what I've seen. Sometimes you aren't drawn to our even repelled by the art style but the story and character are amusing or interesting enough to get you over it.

Yeah, exactly. The art looks very stylized and tongue-in-cheek.

This. I almost passed over the manga when it got translated here because of the art style, but I gave the first volume a try after reading a sneak peak. Got hooked after the first chapter!

Don't judge a book by it's cover applies. It's popular because the characters are lovable, it has great comedy, and a good story (even though it's really long).

I didn't care much for the art style either but once your immersed in that world then you get used to it.

I can understand not wanting to get into it because it's long, but people who dismiss it because of the art might be missing out. Unless looking pretty is an absolute must.

It's not about looking pretty. I just can't deal with the female bodies. Look at their waists, they don't have internal organs. It's creepy as hell.

They didn't used to look like that. Nami had way more realistic proportions at the beginning of the story... Oda just slowly got more and more over the top. His art is getting more whack as the years roll on. Just look at Franky, Jesus.

I actually like the art. Aside from the female characters, whose designs have steadily gotten worse and worse (especially in the anime. Dear god, the anime...) the art is different, but still pretty to look at. And at least the character designs are different enough to keep the characters apart. I don't follow that many manga anymore, but sameface is still a big problem for a lot of series.

I don't understand either. I tried watching one episode and I couldn't stand it.
